The wind was blowing gently.

Aaron could hear the branches of the tree whipping against each other, shedding their leaves and creating a new sound as the fallen foliage flew around, dragged on the floor by the movement of the cold air and its whistle.

It was supposed to be the part where he offered her a jacket and told her they should go home, but this time he couldn't. They were like fossils, and it appeared that even the wind had started taking them into its considerations and refused to disturb them. Like it decided to mess with everything surrounding them but ignored their presence.

Not one strand of her hair was moved by the air and stuck to her wet cheeks as it should have. Not one gust of wind caused goosebumps to grow on his uncovered arms to distract him, as if it knew how crucial this moment was, as if the wind actually cared.

She was like one of her shop roses; hiding behind numerous layers and buds he was certain he would be the one to unwrap what's beneath, and contrary to what he thought, it was her. Doing it voluntarily, removing her guarded petals that were already wilted and letting him in, because after all, he did have that power over her, weakening her walls and slowly sliding through the gaps.

Aaron wished it could be easy to just disconnect and drown in her eyes, innocently mistaking her tears for the reflection of the starry night and enjoy the beauty of the creation that was her.

He allowed himself to try and do that, with the hope of avoiding bathing in the disillusionment— This wasn't the truth he had aspired to unfold.

What used to be hard to distinguish became plainly obvious, and the distant ache became perceptible, taking over his chest in an overwhelming force.

Her impeccable composure was crumbling before his eyes. Tears covered her face like the waves do the shore. Emily let out a trembling sigh, raising her head to look at him.

"I was pregnant"

"figured it out pretty late, though" she chuckled at the memory of herself finding out she was pregnant, how foolish she was to think all the symptoms were normal and what that stupidity presumably had cost her. "I wanted to tell you, but you were with Beth, and you two looked so happy... I didn't want to ruin that" she looked down at her palms that rested on her thighs.

"How could you ever think that?" He asked softly, battling against the tears that threatened to surge their way down his cheeks again. Emily's head snapped up. "I don't know, Aaron. Announcing that I got knocked up by you wasn't going to strengthen your relationship, was it?" She exclaimed in exasperation, shielding herself unnecessarily.

"I'm sorry" she whimpered just as fast, staring back at her hands and biting her lip. She had to continue before she would really hurt herself and bleed. "I was scared, and I wasn't thinking rationally, so I waited..." She said steadily, not sparing him the briefest glance. "And then..." She shook her head weakly, her lip quivering as she wiped away her tears.
