____"What will you miss the most?"
She asked with her head on his chest while he played with her hair. Her eyes were closed as the sun's rays caressed her face. "You, in those dresses" he smiled into her black curls. "You should definitely wear them more" he added as his hand slipped to her back. Emily chuckled, getting up from the grass they were lying on and kissing his lips.
"I'll take that into consideration" she replied teasingly, lying back down but this time beside him, with her back and head resting on the backyard grass. "What about you?" Aaron asked this time.
Emily sighed with her eyes still closed and a smile knowing he was watching her. "I think I'll miss our friends" she answered after a moment of reflection. Aaron hummed. "How do you think they'll react?"
Emily laughed at the question. "I think Ryan will take it well. Daphne will be more upset with herself for not realizing it sooner, but she'll be fine eventually. Noah will be okay too. But Claire?" Emily snorted with a laugh "Not so much. She's going to be furious because we didn't tell her" she said, envisioning Claire's reaction. She would probably feel betrayed, and it would take a long time to get her to even hear them out.
Aaron laughed. "Sounds about right." Emily sighed and turned to meet his eyes. She snuggled closer to him and kissed his shoulder, just as he liked to do to her. Aaron kissed her forehead in response. "I really have a feeling we are close" she said. "three months is a long time being away from everyone, so I really can't wait to see them again" she continued.
Aaron leaned in to claim her lips. "And we will, baby, very soon." He parted from her and returned to his position, both of them gazing at the blue sky and the blinding sun that felt like a warm blanket over their bodies.
It was a bright, warm, sunny day.
____
The night was dark and desolate; even the stars that had shone brightly before Aaron and Emily had disappeared now vanished behind a thick layer of clouds, becoming barely visible and fading progressively, much like their hope.
There was something about the lights from the police cars, the neighborhood streetlights, and the residents' homes that stimulated their tired eyes, making the sky appear less pitch black than they had thought.
Derek stormed out of their house and kicked an unfortunate planting spoon that lay on the porch. He could do nothing but pace and perform some breathing exercises Penelope had forced him to take when she sent him out once his anxiety had started to escalate and made him lash out at them. He was sorry but he couldn't help it; that melancholy feeling was already in his system, and it was too early for that— it's not like they were dead; they were going to find Aaron and Emily. They had to.
He stared at the sky, squinting his eyes in an attempt to count the stars he couldn't find. He hoped to recognize some, maybe even identify a group that resembled the constellations Emily had told him about at some point in his life, but he found nothing, and the noise from the worried residents made it impossible for him to concentrate.
