So they were back to square one.

Restarting the exhausting process of finding new leads, retracing their steps, and profiling in the hope that something new will catch their attention. It was hard to focus, especially when they were running out of time.

Aaron was on his way home from the grocery store. He tended to spend a lot of time there when Emily was at the shop and he wasn't visiting properties and trying to search for places that could match a possible location for the unsub to hold his victims.

When he got home, his heart skipped a beat. He tried to unlock the door, but it was already unlocked, opening slowly as he inserted his key. He tried to remember if he had locked it when he left, and when he couldn't recall, Aaron simply convinced himself that he had been irresponsible and left it open.

But as he closed the door behind him, he heard the noises— subtle knocks and steps. As he went further into the house, he could've sworn he saw a shadow.

His old instincts had begun to engulf him. Aaron quietly rested his bags, going upstairs to the extra room he and Emily had made their temporary office, and took his weapon, placing its holster in its place and drawing his gun.

He began clearing the house quickly, his steps silent and his movements through the top floor of their house too. He was clearing it efficiently, as if he hadn't been away from his actual job and the field for months, like he was truly leading a takeover.

He left the top floor, scanning his way towards the kitchen, and the noises grew louder. Aaron increased the pressure on his gun, keeping it straight and steady, ready for whatever awaited him.

The truth was, ever since Dan was cleared from suspicion by the police, he had begun feeling like someone was watching them again, and he now knew for sure that someone was in his house— he had been right.

"Oh my god!" She screamed, the glass in her hand dropping to the floor and the water splashing on the ground.

Or maybe he was getting paranoid again.

"Emily..." he sighed tiredly, lowering his gun and replacing it back in his holster. "What the fuck, Aaron?" She whispered his name, her palm over her heart. "You almost gave me a heart attack!" She exclaimed, looking over his shoulder for a moment and then lowering herself to pick up the broken pieces of the glass.

"I'm sorry I scared you" he replied with confusion. "But what are you doing here at this hour?" He asked, taking the glass fragments from her hands with the kitchen towel.

"I closed early today. Claire didn't trust us to take care of the security system, so she brought Mike to do that for us" she gave him the details of her unexpected appearance.
