She was cold, freezing even. The low temperature was so intense that she was starting to lose her ability to feel her body. She would have been grateful for that numbness, but it hurt her so much to find relief in it.

It was dark, and she couldn't see anything. Emily had yet to realize it was because her eyes were closed. She tried to listen to her surroundings, to understand where she was and why she was in so much pain. With each detail she captured, a new feeling emerged.

She first managed to taste the earthy flavor of soil, which remained strong on her tongue without disappearing, just like the mud under her fingers. Slowly, she could feel her hands, tapping her fingers against the hard, bumpy ground beneath her. When she focused, she realized it was not mud, it was smooth stones that she was lying on top of.

Then, Emily smelled the trees and plants she could recognize as types she had in her shop. It made her realize she was surrounded by them, the wind whipping against her skin leading her to decide she was somewhere outside, surrounded by nature.

Lastly, she could hear water. It was so silent, and probably what made it possible for her to notice the calming noise of the small, steady waves that spread across the water surface.

It helped her acknowledge that she was completely wet, from head to toe. She opened her eyes, and the ability to see contributed to connecting the details she had gathered to where she was. She was laying at the edge of a lake, not deep enough to sink but deep enough to feel the wet stones under her back and be soaking wet from the water that covered her body and hair.

Emily just stared at the sky, the sun shining brightly but not hurting her eyes. She found the odd thing fascinating as she kept staring at the glowing ball, questioning when it would start hurting her eyes like it should or even warm her.

Her body started to feel numb again, so she painfully got up. She saw her hands filled with cuts and bruises, and the clothes she wore to sleep the night before— a tank top and shorts were stained completely with her blood. She knew it was still gushing, but she couldn't guess from where it was too much and her legs were burning with agonizing pain, bleeding into the water and changing its color with no apparent close end.

Emily rose up the stones, her feet hurting from their rough surface. She didn't make it far before collapsing into the lake, her reflection vanishing in front of her eyes and her knees hit the water, Instead of the scream she wanted to let out, she started coughing blood and mud.

And she could have sworn he wasn't there the moment before, but now she could see him— Aaron, floating lifelessly by her side. The details of his beautiful face would only be known by her in her mind from now on, as there was too much damage, to recognize how he looked before, he was dead.
