Cover of The Grey: 3/5
The cover is dark and minimalist, so this is quite a good representation of the book, which examines moral uncertainty. On the other hand, it is a little drab for the reader.

Title of The Grey: 4/5
"The Grey" is an absolutely ideal title for this novel since you can tell this book will be about moral uncertainty, a story in between good and evil.

Blurb: 5/5
The blurb is exhilarating and very captivating, for it keeps the reader guessing the morality at stake in the reading material. It perfectly sets the right mood for the novel and introduces the internal conflict at hand for the protagonist.

Characters: 8/10
The characters are well laid out, interesting, and developed. Ren, Kyle, Mei—all have their own voices and histories that engage the reader. Since Ren is efficient and good at her job, she shows an emotional coldness that really covers for a hidden vulnerability. Being flamboyant and charming, Kyle is much more spirited and lightened up in tone, yet complex. Of course, Mei, through whom the tragedy has been, and psychologically so deep, you can't help but sympathize with. A little more character development and interaction could give the characters better depth, but this is really a very minor point.

Plot: 8/10
The plot thickens on every chapter as the suspense goes higher and the moral dilemma of the characters turns more serious. Ren's mission together with Kyle's personal and professional conflicts are engaging, and Mei's haunting past all colorful as well. It also has good pacing, and is well able to maintain the reader's interest. Maybe the characters' stories could be given a bit more interconnection earlier in the plot; then the bigger story would be much clearer.

Grammar & Vocabulary: 4/5
The writing is generally clean with a hold on good grammar and vocabulary. A few minor typos and some awkward phrasings are peppered throughout, but nothing that greatly distracts the reader.

Enjoyment: 4/5
All in all, the story follows riveting, complex characters and morally gray themes. The alternating perspectives add depth and variety to the already rich plot, with any filler being kept to a minimum. A few more detailed descriptions in places would have really drawn the reader in.

Overall Rating: 36/45

Review:
"The Grey" is a very interesting read, and although classified as a novel, it defies all traditional beliefs of morality because of the intense development of its characters and the solid fabric of its plot. The story deals rather nicely with the blurred lines of distinction between good and evil, and it certainly makes everyone who reads it question their idea of right and wrong.

Ren is presented in a most intriguing way, a fine and proven killer with a dark past. The tension in her encounter with the shadowy figure adds an element of suspense that sets the stage for future conflicts. Kyle's chapter is a polar opposite from this—a charismatic and carefree attitude—though deep down, it practically hints at trouble through his charming facade. Mei's chapter is sadly poignant, proffering a raw look at her tragically blighted past and the hardiness that goes into forming her character.

While the individual character arcs are compelling, a few more early connections between them might unite such a sprawling cast within the story. The writing is mostly strong; only some lights of very minor grammatical issues are present, no more really than rough edges needing polish.

Overall, "The Grey" is a compelling read that speaks to well-thought material addressing the deepest moral landscapes, and the reader cannot wait to see what happens to these multifaceted characters.
