TRINKETS AND TROLLS

Madame Hooch came back to usher us all inside as it was time to go to our free period. I spent it taking my medications and focusing on my studies, I was a real bookworm. There wasn't really much else to do at Hogwarts, no exams yet, no traveling outside the grounds, and no practising for anything, so it was extremely boring.

I decided after all the studying to take a nap on the couch by the fire. Then, I heard someone entering the common room, so I jolted awake and sat up. I looked behind me to see it was Professor Snape, our Head of House. He spoke while staring at me intensely, "Good Evening, Miss Haynes. I am here to inform you that the Headmaster wishes to speak with you about important matters. Come with me."

I got up from the couch and as we walked through the corridors. I was filled with panic, "Is this about quidditch? Was it about my broom? Or my panic attack? I'm so sorry, Professor Snape."

"You are quite the Slytherin, Miss Haynes. You over-analyze hoping to achieve the correct answer or ask the right question. But, none of them are correct. You are not in trouble at all," he responded without looking at me at all.

We stopped in front of a large archway with a giant golden statue of a gargoyle. Professor Snape muttered something to the gargoyle and it started turning. I was rising to the top of the staircase. We walked in and turned a corner and we were greeted by the Headmaster, who was sitting at a desk with Professor McGonagall at his side. He softly spoke to me, "Hello, Victoria, I need to speak with you on a certain matter."

"Thank you, Severus. May you please go fetch Draco Malfoy?" Dumbledore requested.

"Yes, sir," he answered with a grin and exited the room.

"Nice to meet you officially, Headmaster. Is there a problem? Am I in trouble?" I replied proudly, trying to act formal and welcoming.

"No, no, no, not at all! This is a special matter. I wanted to give you a gift," Dumbledore scoffed. He stood up and gazed at a peculiar painting, "It is common for Slytherins like Salazar Slytherin to be pure-bloods, meaning they come from a long line of wizards and witches. Occasionally, we get one one or two half-bloods, but that's not your case. You are a muggle-born witch."

"A mudblood. I know, lots of Slytherins hate me for being that," I repulsed, looking down at the ground in sorrow.

"No, no, do not think of yourself as that. Mudblood is a foul name to call someone. Did someone call you that?" Dumbledore was very worried about me.

"Draco did," I admitted. "But it's fine, Why are you telling me this exactly?" I tried to the Headmaster get back on track.

"A muggle-born in Slytherin is completely unheard of! There's a trinket that Slytherins from pure-blood families get to pass down to their children. Draco Malfoy has a Slytherin ring because he is from the Malfoy family, a very prestigious, all-Slytherin family. You won't get one because you're muggle-born, but because you're muggle-born you will get a very special Slytherin ring from us." The professor grabbed a small velvet box from Professor McGonagall.

He opened a green velvet box and inside was a gorgeous silver ring with a snake imprinted on it. The snake had a tiny emerald in the space of the eye. The snake was surrounded by tiny emeralds and on the underside of the snake was a little message, "You're a true Slytherin."

"And with it, a Sytherin tie pin. It's the exact same as a Slytherin pure-blood tie pin," Professor McGonagall added.

I took out the ring and placed it on my middle finger. I had two fingers left without rings because my ring fingers are being saved for way-future engagement rings and wedding bands. Then, I took the pin and pinned it right in the centre of my tie. I took the box and thanked him and McGonagall. All of a sudden, Professor Snape came back dragging Draco into the room by the back of his robe. I was so confused, "Woah, Woah, What is the meaning of this? Put him down. Now!"
