During the Guatemalan civil war, between our "government" (the army) and the rebels/ guerrillas many Mayans and their villages were massacred and there was much genocide. Many were simply plucked off the streets of our cities and towns by the army, never to return. These missing are not forgotten and not will they be as long as we remember the terrible crimes and injustices committed by the one governing body that is supposed to protect it's citizens.
My fathers sisters (2) and his brother all went missing, never to be found again. It wasn't until 6 years ago after many years of searching that we discovered what happened to only one.
My aunt Abaline was a suspected guerrilla and was captured by the army when she was only 19. She was tortured until she died then they discarded her body like trash into a mass grave with her boyfriend and their young child. I am already older then my beautiful aunt will ever get to be.
Sadly, stories like this are way to common and many were never blessed to discover what happened. The American government and the world were all to happy to support the army and the killings as long as it didn't affect them. This horrific crime against the Mayan Indians can never happen again. So we, the descendants and the next generation, must never forget the lives given and lost to improve our country and to make it safer for our children.
