Jade Mountain was perfect for Turtle. Well, almost perfect. His entire winglet was gone, saving the world. Turtle thought miserably. While I'm here safe and sound while my friends go out there and risk their life. Turtle looked down at his talons. He was the one with animus magic. He was just too cowardly to use them. What does Kinkajou think of me? He wondered. Ever since he met Kinkajou, his thoughts have just been circling about her. Should I use my animus magic to help students? Am I a hero? Does Kinkajou approve of my decisions? And so on. Kinkajou had always said they were a team, but he was the sidekick. The sidekick died while the hero continued. He was walking to his biology class, head down when he bumped into someone.
"Turtle! Watch it! I know your entire winglet is gone, but stop being a mope," Anemone snarled. "You have us, Seawings, you slimy piece of seaweed."
Turtle rolled his eyes.
"Anemone, you're acting more bratty every day. Does that make you feel royal and civilized in any way?"
Anemone was going to say something but then was silenced. She just stomped away, giving everyone a disgusted face. She pushed Onyx, a Sandwing, away. Onyx gave her a disgusted face back. Turtle never paid attention in class. Especially biology. Gong, went the bell. That was to signal class was about to start. Turtle didn't bother rushing to class. If anything, he'd be glad to skip it.
"Turtle, not again," Tsunami saw him trying to avoid class. "We talked about this. Go be a good student. Make your big sis proud."
Turtle just rolled his eyes and shuffled forward.
"OK, welcome class," Clay said cheerfully. "Today we'll be talking about different dragon wings along with their shapes and sizes. Now-" Blah blah blah, Turtle thought grumpily. He started to fantasize about his winglet saving the world, all of them together. Too bad I'm a coward, he thought ruefully. Don't be silly, Kinkajou's voice said in his head. We're a team, remember? Saving the day. That's us! Right, Turtle? Turtle? TURTLE? HELLOO? Turtle realized that this wasn't Kinkajou's voice, but rather... Clay? He snapped back to reality only to see Clay waving his wings at Turtle to get his attention. Everyone in the class was looking at him with concerned faces.
"Um, sorry, could you repeat that?" Turtle asked.
Clay sighed. "I said, which tribe has the biggest wings in general?"
Turtle blanked. Luckily, before he had the chance to guess a random tribe, (he was about to guess Mudwings for their humongous size) a roar, ear-piercing, was ringing through the halls from the entrance. Everyone in class immediately tried running to see what all the drama was about.
"Class! Single-file line! Gosh! Do none of you know what that is?" Clay said.
Turtle pat Clay on the back, before joining the mob to see what all the drama was about. With his view, he could see Icicle circling four other dragonets.
"Wiintter," Icicle's voice slithered. "I should have expected you to come back. All you've done is bring disappointment to our Icewing family. And who are these dragons? Your friends?" She pointed to each one of them with her whip-thin tail.
"Icicle, that's enough," Tsunami commanded. Beside her, Sunny nodded her head even though it probably wouldn't have done much. A red Rainwing curled her tail with her fangs barred.
"Don't come near us! We're here to SAVE THE DAY, thank you very much. So move!" Turtle could immediately recognize the voice of Kinkajou. Kinkajou! They came back! He thought happily. But, what for?
Winter was breathing unsteadily.
"Icicle, if you could just move and just mind your own business, we'll happily be on your way, not bothering you."
Icicle cackled. "You and what army?" She taunted.
"Um, I don't think that's how you're supposed to use that sentence," Kinkajou whispered loudly to Moonwatcher. Icicle stiffened. She was about to attack when Tsunami and Clay dragged Icicle back. Icicle tried fighting them but had no luck due to the two being stronger than her combined.
"Where's Turtle?" Kinkajou asked, getting straight to the point. "Turtle? We need your help."
Turtle saw Winter scan the mob and he tried to duck. But he was too slow. Winter already spotted him.
"Ah, there he is, Turtle! Come over here."
Turtle reluctantly came forward. At this time, the mob had disappeared, grumbling as they headed back to class. Moon asked Sunny for permission to excuse Turtle from all his classes, and when she agreed, Turtle, Winter, Kinkajou, and Moon got together in front of the school to explain their plan. Moon started.
"So, basically..."
