"You look beautiful" Isaac complimented me as I came down to meet him in the living room.
"Thank you" I said and he gave me a smile that melted my heart. I thought he'd be angry at me but here he is, smiling and throwing around compliments like the conversation upstairs never took place. Whatever be the case, I'm glad he's in a good mood.
"Shall we?" he asked extending his arm for me to take, I complied and took his arm in mine and the smell of his cologne instantly engulfed me, I smiled, he was looking so good in his black three piece suit, for a moment I wished the circumstances were different between us. Ever since Isaac and I have made peace with each other, I've started looking at him in a different light altogether; he seems more human and oh so attractive now.
"Why that face?" he asked out of nowhere.
"Huh? What? Oh I was just thinking about a book I read, that's all" I tried to come up with a lie.
"You're a terrible liar, I hope you know that" he remarked and my face went red. God this is embarrassing!
I decided to not say anything because I'm sure he'll catch me lying, again. We reached his car and he opened the passenger door for me, how chivalrous of him, old Isaac would never do this!
He got in after me and started the car. The drive to Alex's place was quiet, he kept his focus on driving and I kept my focus on my phone or at least I pretended to. With Isaac sitting so close to me, looking like a greek god, it was hard for me to focus on anything else besides the man who is my lawful husband and still outside my reach.
It took us around thirty minutes to reach Alex's house, I've been here before but tonight is going to be different, especially because me and Isaac have come to terms with each other.
"Hello beautiful" Alex greeted me as soon as we entered through the main door, I smiled at him. He was making his way towards me and Isaac.
"I must say, you two are the hottest couple in attendance here tonight" he commented and my face started burning with embarrassment.
"Tell us something we don't already know" came Isaac's reply and then, both men started laughing... strange creatures they are.
"Anyways, you two enjoy the party I'll get back to you after greeting some important guests and potential future clients" and with that Alex went off to meet an old couple who came in after us.
Isaac took my hand in his and something fluttered in my stomach, I remember him dragging me around like a slave in such parties, his strong grip and angry eyes but today, he's different; his touch gentle and eyes kind. I love this side of him.
Parties were never my thing and they never will be, its been an hour since we got here and all we've done is meet people who know Isaac but not me. Isaac tried his best to involve me in the conversations he was having with his friends but here's the truth: they're his friends, not mine and from what I've seen, I don't think I want to be friends with any of them. Being rich is good but being a total snob is unacceptable!
"Hey, are you okay?" Isaac asked me, he must've sensed my unease. We were currently seated at Alex's couch with a group of Isaac's old clients who were talking business with him.
"Yes, just need some fresh air" I answered and he nodded.
"Okay, but be careful and don't be gone for too long" he almost whispered in my ear, his voice spreading goosebumps across my skin. What is wrong with me tonight?!
I stood up and excused myself from the group of people seated infront of me. I've been here before and I know where I'd feel most at home, I made my way towards the massive bookshelf Alex has and started looking for something interesting.
"There you are, I knew I'd find you here" someone said and I instantly recognised that voice, it was Jack.
"Well, it's me the bookworm at her usual spot" I joked and turned around to face him but when I saw who was with him, my face fell. It was Suzie, I guess now that she isn't getting attention from Isaac, she has latched herself on to Jack, whatever be the case, I hate her!
"Oh, hi Suzie" I said trying to be polite but I'm sure she must've seen the disgust on my face.
"Oh save it, no need for formalities" she said with a wave of her hand as I gave her a tight lipped smile.
"So, your husband dragged you to yet another boring party?" Jack said jokingly and I nodded smiling.
"This one is super boring, I can now say I've never been to a party as boring as this one" I love how easygoing Jack is, he understands that I hate going to parties from the day we first met.
"Yea and how could you enjoy parties when you're all alone in them? Even your husband prefers to abandon you at such events because you're no fun... I feel sorry for him sometimes, he loves going to parties and clubs while you love what? A book with characters that aren't even real? You're such a bore" Suzie said, adding a little yawn in the end for more emphasis.
"Take that back Suzie" Jack demanded in a deadly voice while I stood there, staring at them like a fool, it took me a good minute to process everything she had just said to me and when all of it got registered in my brain, a tear escaped my eye but I wiped it away quickly. I'm not gonna let her see the the weaker side of me.
Jack was glaring at Suzie but she wasn't affected by his glare or his words, so I took things in my own hands.
I chuckled and both Jack and Suzie looked at me as if I've lost it. "You're right, I'm such a bore but hey, atleast I have more than two braincells and can read a book unlike you. And don't worry about Isaac, he's happy with a wife who's smart and intelligent" I said and the look of satisfaction on Jack's face boosted my confidence even more.
"I mean if he wanted a party freak, he would've married you I guess but he's into intelligent people so..." I added with a scoff and that was it. Her face was red with anger but before she could open her mouth to say something, Isaac appeared on the scene and she had to swallow her words.
"Your wife is something, I don't know how you deal with her" she said, her voice laced with anger.
"Careful Suzie, you're crossing a line here" Isaac threatened and that was enough to make her turn around and walk away in embarrassment.
