The next morning, Crystal awoke to Gigi already looking at her. She smiled.
"You and your staring problem," she joked softly, not trying to break the quiet of the peaceful morning.
"I can't help it," Gigi played along, voice barely above a whisper. "You're so nice to stare at."
Crystal rolled her eyes and nuzzled her face back into her pillow. She sighed and closed her eyes, not wanting to start the new day just yet.
"How are you feeling?" Gigi asked, head laying next to Crystal's.
Crystal blinked her colorful eyes back open. She did a quick mental check over her body, feeling for anything that felt off, looking up and over.
"Fine," she settled on, not really feeling anything out of the ordinary.
Gigi looked like she was about to say something more, but Crystal shut it down before she could. She didn't want to talk about the bad, especially when she was feeling good and was happily back in her home. The sun shone on her face warmly through the window.
"First morning back home," she smiled, veering Gigi's thoughts away from where they lingered.
"Feels nice, doesn't it?" Gigi agreed.
"Very nice."
Crystal's eyes closed again, the warmth of the bright sky keeping her sleepiness strong. Before Gigi could say anything else, Crystal was half asleep again. Gigi smiled softly, quickly scratching Crystal's hair for a moment, and then stood up off of the bed. While Crystal slept in, Gigi decided to be productive.
She freshened up in the bathroom before heading to the kitchen, quietly pulling out pans and ingredients to make pancakes. For the first time since before everything went downhill, they could finally have a decent breakfast.
As the batter baked on the stove, Gigi's mind started to wander. Crystal had shut down her attempt at talking about their situation. Her curt answer to how she was feeling made Gigi think that she wasn't actually fine, that she didn't want Gigi to know how she was actually feeling. She had changed the subject immediately. It was unsettling to Gigi.
But, if Crystal didn't want to talk about it, Gigi was not going to push.
When all the pancakes were carefully stacked on a plate and the table was set, Gigi went back into the bedroom, rolling her eyes with a smile at seeing Crystal still fast asleep.
She crawled onto the bed next to Crystal and started to tickle her sides until the girl stirred.
"Five more minutes," Crystal murmured into the pillow she rolled her face into.
Gigi tickled her more, and now that Crystal was more awake, it started to have more effect. At first it was a few giggles and a shuffle, and then it was loud squeals and thrashing limbs. She hunched over herself, trying to protect her sides from Gigi's prodding fingers.
"Okay, Okay! I'm up, I'm awake!" she said through her laughs, begging Gigi to stop.
Gigi pulled away, staring at Crystal with a wide smile, waiting for her to sit up. Crystal sat up, lavender hair falling wildly around her face.
"Look what you did," Crystal accused, pointing to the knotted hair that fell over her eyes.
Gigi brushed the hair away with gentle hands.
"You're hair is like this every morning, Crys. Don't kid yourself."
Crystal huffed.
"No it's not."
