CHAPTER ONE
LORELEI ALEXIS SPEARS

“Rory!” Colby ran into the train cart, throwing his bag to the ground and pulling me into a tight embrace, wrapping his arms around me. I hugged him back. God, how much I had missed him.

He was always like this. Every time we came back from Summer break, he would act like he hadn’t talked to me in years; even though we sent letters back and forth everyday. We would talk about everything that was happening with each other, and how much we couldn’t wait to see each other, once again, in the new school year. It felt like such a long time away, but here we were, hugging each other in a train cart on our way to Hogwarts, once again, for our sixth year.

I laughed, and we let each other go. He threw his luggage in the compartment, next to mine, and then took a seat across from me, staring eagerly.

“So, tell me about your Summer? How was it?” He asked with a smile. He never looked away from me. I guess that’s why I liked Colby LeStrange so much, no matter what, I always had his undivided attention. I suppose that’s why he was my best friend.

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, “Oh, you know. It was the usual.” I shrugged, “My parents couldn’t make it this Summer…” He scoffed, running a hand through his brown curls.

“When are they gonna stop with those bloody excuses? Last summer they said they couldn’t catch a flight, the Summer before they said that y–” I cut him off.

“I know.” I gave him a smile. I didn’t want Colby to worry about me, even though I was really upset about my parents making up another one of their excuses just so they wouldn’t have to visit me. I was used to it. After all, I hadn’t seen them in a few years. Not since I was ten. I’m sixteen now.

Colby looked at me as if he was seeing straight through me, but he could tell I didn’t want to talk about it so he left it alone. Another one of the things I appreciated about Colby LeStrange, he didn't pry.

“How was your Summer?” I broke the silence, he snapped his head back up to look at me. It was almost like he was surprised I had asked for some reason. I knew Colby didn’t have the best time at home. His mother walked out on them when he was just three years old, and his father was always busy, or making himself busy just so he wouldn’t have to see his own son. I’d known Colby for years, but I knew there was something about his family he wasn’t telling me. But just as he did for me, I respected his privacy, no matter how curious I got.

“It was—fine” He paused before saying the last word. He looked back down, something was wrong. I wasn’t sure if I should ask or not. “Colby? Are you alright?” I asked genuinely concerned, but when I heard my exact words mimicked from an all too familiar voice, my head shot up to look at the door. Theodore Nott.

Theodore Nott was one of the meanest Slytherins around. He had it out for Mudbloods. Him being a Nott, he was raised with the pureblood supremacy mindset, bullshit. So far there hadn’t been a day where he hadn’t picked on me, trust me. I’ve kept track. The funny thing is he would seem nice to anyone who looked at him. Fluffy brown hair, in a lighter shade and blue eyes. He looked to all the world like a nice person. But he was the total opposite. I couldn’t stand Theodore Nott, and neither could Colby.

Theodore and Colby never liked each other. But then again, Colby never really got along with any of the other Slytherins. Ever since first year, they’ve had a rivalry. It probably didn’t help that Colby, a pureblood Slytherin, was best friends with a muggle-born Ravenclaw. Me. Unfortunately, that also made me a target for Theodore Nott and his group of friends.
