Jace stood at the head of the council table, staring the lords down as he spoke. Rhaenys and Corlys stood on his left side, with Aenys at his right. "I see no other choice. We need to send a dragon." Jace says, having been just informed of Aegon's next moves.

"Where?" Rhaenyras voice asks, stunning everyone with her presence. Jace stares at her, surprised. He quickly clears his throat before continuing. "To support the war that your vassals have been fighting in your absence...Your Grace." Jace says, itching to ask where his mother had been.

Rhaenys raises her chin as she speaks. "Cole's host has grown since riding abroad. He raised the levies of both Rosby and Stokeworth and, with their combined strength, sacked Duskendale." Rhaenys states, reiterating the information Aenys had gained from his spy.

Ser Steffon suddenly stumbles forward in shock. "Duskendale?" Steffon asks

Aenys inhales. "The city has fallen. Many Darklyn men declared for Aegon. Those who refused were put to the sword." Aenys offers, aware of the grave news the knight is receiving. "What of my father?" Steffon asks

"He kept his oath. Cole took his head for it." Aenys states, watching as the man silently grieves. Rhaenyra wanted to offer him some words of comfort when her son spoke up.

"Where have you been, these last days? You vanished without so much as a word." Jace says, very much looking like his step-brother, which startled his mother at their eerie similarities.

Rhaenyra clears her throat. "Well, I apologize for my absence and the secrecy, but such was necessary. I went to King's Landing." Rhaenyra admits, causing everyone to straighten up in shock.

Jace's eyes widen, his anger flaring. "To what possible end?" Jace asks, trying to keep a level head. Rhaenyra faces him fully. "To meet Queen Alicent and sue for peace." Rhaenyra says

Jace's fingers curl against his sword as he tries to keep his hysteria from his voice. "You saw Alicent?" Jace asks

Rhaenyra nods. "Yes, I did."

Jace scoffs, raising his voice. "You could've been taken or slain!" Jace exclaims "I inherited 80 years of peace from my father." Rhaenyra says, also raising her voice. "Before I was to end it, I needed to know that there was no other path. And now I do." Rhaenyra says, resigned.

She meets her stepson's gaze before looking back at Jace. "Only one choice remains to me: either I win my claim or die." Rhaenyra says

Jace straightens, resting his hands on the hilt of his sword. Those were the very words he'd been waiting for. "We stand at the ready." Jace says, cooly.

"Cole's victories have only emboldened him. He marches on Rook's Rest." Aenys says

Corlys nods, "His host was just hours away when Aeny's spies ravens took wing." Coryls says

Rhaenyra's eyebrows furrow. "Why Rook's Rest? After Duskendale? It is but a small coastal keep." Rhaenyra says

"Cause Lord Staunton is a member of this council. And because his castle is small and vulnerable and there for the taking. Cole knows we have no army on the mainland." Alfred says, approaching the queen as she looks down at the painted table.

"He is brazen." Bartimos says "He is daring us to act." Alfred almost exclaims. Jace quickly interrupts. "We need to send a dragon." Jace states

Rhaenyra raises her gaze. The tension across the council was rising. Rhaenyra hums, almost amused. "There are those who have mistaken my caution for weakness." Rhaenyra says, briefly looking at Alfred. "Let that be their undoing. I will go." Rhaenyra says

Jace sighs, shaking his head.

"My queen–" Corlys starts

"You cannot." Jace interrupts, frustrated beyond repair. Rhaenyra shakes her head. "I will not lose dragons to war whilst I hide here in my castle." Rhaenyra says

"I agree with my brother, my Queen. Our allies raise their banners for you." Aenys starts, earning a nod from Rhaenyra. "Yes, they do." Rhaenyra says "If you die, all is lost. Send me." Aenys says

Jace quickly shakes his head, as does Rhaenys and almost all the council. Alfred straightens. Finally, he almost shouts in his head. "No." Rhaenyra says with a sharp shake of her head.

Aenys places his hands on the table. "I have the largest and deadliest dragon. Daemons do not compare to even mine. I will burn Cole's lines and withdraw before King's Landing could even raise the alarm." Aenys says

Rhaenyra shakes her head. "No, you are still healing. What if Aemond meets you? I cannot risk your life, not in your state. And I do not say this to belittle your skill nor strength but to express concern as a mother." Rhaenyra says, earnestly. Aenys went to plead his case when Rhaenys stepped forward before either he or Jace said anything. "You must send me, Your Grace. After Terraxes, Meleys is your largest dragon and no stranger to battle." Rhaenys says

Aenys opens his mouth to dispute, but Rhaenys places a hand on top of his, keeping her gaze on the Queen. "I will meet Cole." Rhaenys says

....

Aenys strides after Rhaenys, upset. "You cannot do this Rhaenys, I have a horrible feeling." Aenys says

The princess stopped in her place, turning to the boy she saw as hers. Rhaenys sighed, gently cradling his cheek, she had the same feeling. "All will be well, I promise." She whispers

Before she could react, Aenys hugs her. "Give them hell." He whispers into her ear, knowing in his heart, this would be the last time he saw her.

A/N

Brief spoiler of the battle in Rooks rest....Ya'll probably already watched it, anyway...

This is why I had Aenys injured so he couldn't fight above Rook's rest, or he'd probably kill Aemond and Aegon. I mean look at Rhaenys, who almost won over the two and her dragon only had one head and was smaller than Vhagar. If Terraxes enters the equation, that pretty much sums up the battle and I am not ready to end the story lol. And maybe he still loses because Aenys is in love with Aemond and lets himself die, idk, but I personally think Aenys wouldn't hesitate again, not like before.

So ya'll see my conundrum...?

Hence the long injury down his back, which must look like a saw ate at it. Poor bro has been injured down his back way too many times. First, in book one, he was in the battle for the stepstones, he had scars of old wounds, and then the spicy scene between him and Aemond, where his back was scratched up by large jagged rocks, and now this, gotdaamn. My boy has been through it, though he didn't mind the spicy ones....ya'll can't see it but I'm cackling.

Anyways....Sorry for the long authors note, hope you enjoyed this chapter!!
