Phuwin sat in his room, his laptop propped up as he video-called his family back in Thailand. The screen was filled with the familiar faces of his loved ones, all smiles and laughter as they enjoyed the virtual family gathering.Tay: “We’ve missed you so much, Phu! How’s everything over there?”
Phuwin: “It’s going well, Dad. Just a lot of work and studying, but I’m managing.”
New: “We’re so proud of you baby, for finishing your studies. We were really hoping you’d make it for the anniversary celebration.”
Gemini: “Yeah, you’re definitely coming, right? It won’t be the same without you!”
Phuwin’s smile faltered slightly as he looked at his youngest brother.
Phuwin: “I’m really sorry, Gem. I don’t think I can make it. I got selected for an internship, and they expect me to be here.”
The mood shifted as the family’s faces fell. Gemini’s expression turned from hopeful to disappointed.
Gemini: “But Phu, it’s our parents’ anniversary! You promised you’d be back.”
Phuwin: “I know, Gem. I’ll try my best, but I don’t think it’ll be possible. I’m really sorry.”
Gemini pouted and crossed his arms, his voice a sulky whisper.
Gemini: “Don’t talk to me, hmmp.”
Phuwin smiled fondly, his heart aching for his brother.
Phuwin: “Aw, come here, Gem.”
Phuwin leaned closer to the screen and made a playful face, trying to cheer Gemini up.
Phuwin: “I promise I’ll make it up to you. Just don’t be too mad at me.”
Dunk: “Yeah, don’t let him off the hook too easily. He’s got to learn to balance his work and family.”
Phuwin: “Hey, Dunk, don’t gloat! I’m doing my best here.”
Tay: “We do understand, Phu. We’re proud of you for all you’ve achieved. It’s just… we were looking forward to having you home.”
New: “We’re happy you’re doing well, but it’s hard not to feel a bit sad.”
Phuwin’s eyes softened as he looked at his parents.
Phuwin: “I’ll be home soon, I promise. Don’t be sad. I have a surprise for you all.”
Gemini: (still sulking) “A surprise? What is it?”
Phuwin: “It won’t be a surprise if I tell you now. When the time comes, you’ll like it. So don’t be mad at me, okay, baby Gem?”
Dunk: (teasingly) “Always with the surprises. Well, you better keep your word.”
Phuwin: “I will. And Gem, I know you’re upset, but I’ll make it up to you."
Tay: “We all miss you, Phu. Take care of yourself, and we’ll see you soon.”
New: “Yes, we love you baby. Be safe and eat on time okay? Don't overwork yourself.”
The family continued to chat for a little while longer, exchanging laughs and light-hearted banter. Despite the distance, the warmth of their love was evident. As the call ended, Phuwin remained in his room, a mixture of sadness and excitement in his heart. He knew the distance was hard, but his surprise would soon bring them all together.
Dunk: “We’ll keep an eye on Gem for you. He’s been extra moody lately.”
Phuwin chuckled and sighed fondly.
Phuwin: “I know. Thanks for looking out for him.”
As the call was cut, Phuwin smiled to himself, knowing that his surprise would make the reunion even sweeter.
