As the first light of dawn streamed through the windows, New made his way to the kitchen, a familiar sense of comfort accompanying his morning routine. Cooking breakfast for his family was his cherished duty, a way to start their day with love and warmth. He mentally prepared for the usual morning bustle, but as he neared the kitchen, he was met with an unexpected sight.
The kitchen was bustling with the aroma of freshly cooked food, and the dining table was laid out with an array of dishes that would make any breakfast lover’s mouth water. The spread was impressive—sticky rice with mango, khanom krok (Thai coconut pancakes), and bowls of steaming hot Thai tea. The table was also filled with an assortment of his family’s favorite items: pad Thai, grilled pork skewers, and freshly made spring rolls. New blinked in surprise, his brow furrowing as he tried to make sense of the scene before him.
“Wait a minute,” he muttered to himself, his confusion evident. “Did I somehow sleepwalk and cook all this in my sleep?”
He glanced around the kitchen, half-expecting to see a ghostly figure of himself from a parallel universe. The countertops were spotless, and the kitchen was immaculate, as if it had been used by someone with a deft touch.
New’s puzzled expression grew as he approached the counter, inspecting the neatly stacked plates and the perfectly arranged utensils. “Is this some sort of culinary magic trick? Did the maids decide to surprise me for once?” He chuckled, shaking his head. “No, they’re busy with other tasks, and I’m definitely the first one awake.”
As New continued to ponder the mysterious spread of food in the kitchen, his thoughts were interrupted by a sudden embrace from behind. Startled, he spun around to find Phuwin grinning widely. “Surprise!” Phuwin exclaimed, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
New’s shock quickly melted into joy, his eyes filling with unshed tears. “Phu, baby, you came? How? I’m not dreaming, am I?” he stammered, still trying to grasp the reality of the situation.
Phuwin laughed softly, his voice warm and reassuring. “No, Papa, you’re not dreaming. I really did come.” He then noticed New’s fake-angry expression and chuckled. “Oh, I see how it is. You’re mad at me for coming all the way from the US to see my only beautiful papa, and now you’re telling me to go away?”
New playfully pouted, his arms still wrapped around Phuwin. “Yes, I’m angry at you. You said you couldn’t make it to your own parents’ anniversary, remember?”
Phuwin grinned, his eyes full of affection. “Oww, I’m so hurt. Here I am, risking it all to surprise you, and this is how I’m treated?” He made a dramatic gesture, pretending to be wounded.
New couldn’t help but smile at Phuwin’s antics and hugged him tightly once more. “My baby is so cute.”
Just then, the sound of footsteps approaching the dining area caught their attention. “Go on, surprise them,” New encouraged. Phuwin nodded and followed him to the dining room.
