Jia awoke to the gentle warmth of the sun's first rays filtering through the hastily erected tents of the temporary encampment. The golden light played on her face, and for a moment, she felt a fleeting sense of unease tighten in her stomach. Around her, the muffled sounds of villagers packing up their belongings filled the air, a reminder of the storm that had ravaged their valley the night before.
She turned over, expecting to find Lei nestled beside her. But the spot where he should have been was empty, the blanket crumpled and cold. Her heart skipped a beat, panic rose in her throat. "Lei?" she called softly, hoping he was just out of sight or perhaps playing nearby.
When there was no response, her heart began to race. Jia pushed herself up, her eyes darting around the camp. The villagers, their faces etched with fatigue, moved about with purpose, but there was no sign of Lei. She called his name again, louder this time, her voice cracking with desperation.
A nearby villager, a plump goose with feathers still ruffled from sleep, looked up from her task of gathering supplies. Jia rushed over, her voice trembling. "Excuse me, have you seen a small cub? My son, Lei—he's missing."
The goose's eyes softened with concern. "I saw a cub running off early this morning," she said gently. "He mentioned something about not being able to leave something behind."
Jia's heart pounded in her chest. "Which way did he go?"
The goose pointed a wing back towards the valley, the direction from which they had fled. Jia's breath caught, fear gripping her. "Thank you," she murmured, her mind racing with worry.
The sight of the villagers packing up, the remnants of the storm visible in the scattered debris, and broken branches faded into the background as Jia's focus sharpened. Without another moment's hesitation, she turned and sprinted towards the valley.
As she ran, the landscape blurred around her. She pushed herself harder, each step fueled by a mother's fear. The thought of him alone in the valley, with its dangers and remnants of the storm, spurred her on. She had to find Lei. She had to bring him back safely.
He was so young, so vulnerable. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him. The valley loomed closer, its shadows deep and foreboding. Jia's breath came in ragged gasps, but she didn't slow down. She wouldn't stop until Lei was safe in her arms again.

Lei's small paws pounded against the cobblestone streets of the deserted village, his heart racing with panic. His mind whirled as he tried to remember where he had left the scroll. The need to evacuate had driven them out in such a rush that everything was a blur. He darted past familiar buildings, their once comforting presence now seeming eerie and desolate in the morning light.
The barracks. It must be there.
His breaths came in quick, shallow gasps as he reassured himself, "Just get to the Jade Palace, grab the scroll, and leave before anyone sees me." The plan seemed simple enough, but dread gnawed at him.
The streets, usually bustling with life, were eerily silent. Broken carts and scattered belongings lay abandoned, remnants of the hurried evacuation. Lei's heart sank as he saw the village in such a state of disarray.
Suddenly, a deafening boom echoed through the village, the ground shaking beneath his feet. Lei skidded to a halt, eyes wide with shock as debris and dust flew towards him. Instinctively, he threw his hands over his face, his body trembling. Bits of wood and stone pelted him, and he coughed violently, trying to clear the dust from his lungs.
