A loud thump split my head in half. I jumped out of bed, not realizing what was happening, and then I opened my eyes. The knocking was repeated, and it was at my door. I waved my hand and the obeyed my gesture and opened. Behind it stood my father, frowning slightly.
"I told you not to use your powers in our house. What if it wasn't me? If it was your boyfriend, for instance. You didn't tell him about your powers, did you, Olivia?", My father stepped toward me. I couldn't get out of bed.
"No. Well, I should, because he's my best friend. I don't want to hide anything from him.", I objected. I just swung my legs off the bed.
"You shouldn't. Your ability is very dangerous. If people decide you're not like them, even I won't be able to help you.", Dad sighed and sat down next to me. He had a plate full of food in his hands. "You haven't had lunch. You missed dinner, too."
"Thank you. Leave it.", I asked. Dad put the plate on the floor by the bed.
"You'll promise me not to tell anyone about your... What's it called?", Dad's gray eyes looked into mine. I could feel his love now. He'd always had that feeling, but it was often overridden by others.
"Telekinesis. That's what it's called. Though I'm not sure I can give it an exact name.", I reached for the food and set the plate on my lap. My stomach felt unpleasantly empty.
"Your mother was the same way. But she didn't admit it to me until after you were born. She explained that people like her would be hunted, and the more powers she used, the easier it was to track her down. And you keep your mouth shut and stay quiet. Forget about this telekinesis until you're dead.", Father said in a calm tone, sighing after almost every word.
"Okay. But I can feel this power inside me. It's building up, but it's not going anywhere. It's growing with me. I'm afraid it's gonna swallow me up.", I said anxiously. "I often go out of town to dump it somewhere. I'm practicing. This power can be useful if used properly."
"What?", my father faded and pulled away. "You've already made quite a mess. You can't do that. No way. Damn... What have you done...", he clutched his head. "I just hope they don't notice. I'm upset with you. You will never leave the settlement again."
"You can't stop me.", I shook my head.
"I didn't come here to talk to you about that. I know the value of my words, and you must understand the value of your actions. Sooner or later, you'll realize I'm right and you'll thank me. Let's change the subject, Olivia. I'm tired of arguing about this.", he asked me tiredly.
"What did you come here to argue about? ", I turned to him, shoving a potato into my mouth. It was delicious, and crisp.
"About your future. I want to marry you off. ", he blurted out.
The potato stuck in my throat and I coughed hard while staring at Dad. I tried to find the shadow of a joke in his eyes, but... The grayness of the irises was cold. And serious. "WHAT?! ", I screamed as soon as I could breathe normally.
