It has been two days since Drake and I decided to go different ways. It wasn't easy for me, I had to quickly learn how to hunt, even though I was horrible at that. Yesterday I spent three hours trying to catch a turkey, following it through the forest and scaring it away whenever I was not careful enough, but it was the turkey or me, like the question of life and death. I still had some pieces of it in my bag. I tried not to rush and be careful, using all of my senses to avoid bumping into someone or something. I wouldn't stand a chance in a fight.
Today I woke up after my sleep under a tree and opened the map to see where I was. I could figure out the rest by using the sun to find out where East and West were like Drake taught me. I realized that just South of me, there was a major city that was marked as "the forsaken". It was better to avoid these places for me alone. Drake would tell me that it was like entering hell on Earth and that it would be filled with monsters and enemies, but he wasn't here to stop me from this discovery.
Getting some turkey from my bag, I put up a fire to fry it and then quickly move on. I was hoping to find some food in the city. The sun was up quickly, but daylight made me feel uneasy, as always, though I knew it was safer than darkness. I had to continue moving. I got up and put out the fire to not attract anything to follow me. I looked around, feeling like I was watched. Every small movement of tree leaves or sound of a squirrel hiding up in the tree just made me jump. I grabbed my blaster and kept it by my side as I proceeded. The city was just a couple of hours away, I could feel it. I wondered if anyone still lived there or if it had actually been inhabited by monsters only. That was for me to find out. The risks were high, but I might have found something useful too.
About an hour into my journey, I began to feel paranoid. I knew that I was trying to be quiet but that feeling that I got this morning, of being watched or even followed, didn't go anywhere. I was making more and more stops to look around and I was looking back, suspiciously staring into shadows way too often. Maybe I got a tail on me. Too bad I didn't have anyone to watch my back. But maybe it was even better for me.
The first structures that I met excited me. They looked bigger than I expected, abandoned and destroyed and looted as much as possible. I could imagine how much useful stuff you could find there many years ago. They were organized in lines and streets, well-structured. Trees and other plants grew through the houses everywhere and it wasn't much different from the forest anymore. I decided to stay away from the structures and move along outside to keep my eye on the area. The further I went in, the bigger and taller the structures got. I guess, I was just getting closer to the center. I needed to be more careful.
I heard a weird sound, growling and loud. My heart sank. It was so far away, but I found cover in the closest building and peeked above a brick wall to see what was happening. Some men were packed into a weird vehicle driving around. It was making growling sounds, like it was alive. They were all dressed in black long robes, just like the men attacking my settlement. I got a strange mixture of anger and fear in me, once I've realized that. The vehicle was fast, but I started to follow it anyway, heading towards the same direction, hiding in the houses or behind them. They were driving towards the center of the city. I wasn't sure if those assholes had their settlement there or some kind of base, or maybe they were just looking to attack another innocent village.
Soon I lost them from my sight but the growling sound still was leading me into the direction where they were headed. It was hard to miss it in the soundless atmosphere that was established here. I caught up with them, at least that's what I thought when I reached a city square that was half drowned in water. Their vehicle stopped next to the water source and it seemed like they all left. I walked out of my cover and looked around. They were nowhere to be seen. It was way too weird. Gun shots sounded not so far away and I ran there to see what was happening.
