Tokoyami's world was fuzzy and strange as he slowly opened his eyes in the dim, soft glow of the recovery room. His mouth was numb, stuffed with cotton, and his mind drifted somewhere between dreams and reality. He vaguely remembered being at the dentist's office and Hawks saying something about "wisdom teeth."
And then he saw him—Hawks, leaning casually against the wall, scrolling on his phone while he waited for Tokoyami to wake up. But in Tokoyami's hazy mind, Hawks wasn't just Hawks. He was a superhero, a guardian angel, a vision of golden wings and soft smiles.
Tokoyami's eyes grew wide, and without thinking, he reached out, his fingers making small grabbing motions in Hawks' direction.
"Haaaaawks," he slurred, his voice muffled by the cotton in his mouth.
Hawks looked up, amused, and stepped closer. "Hey, sleepyhead. You doing okay there?"
Tokoyami blinked up at him, completely starstruck, and then, in a move that shocked Hawks to the core, Tokoyami wrapped his arms around his waist, clinging to him like a sleepy koala. "You... are amazing," Tokoyami murmured dreamily. "So cool. The coolest. Wings all... golden and stuff..."
Hawks chuckled, though he felt a bit awkward—Tokoyami wasn't normally one for physical affection. But anesthesia had apparently unlocked a side of him Hawks had never seen before.
"Aww, you're sweet, little bird," Hawks teased, patting him on the back. "Didn't know you felt that way about my wings."
Tokoyami's grip tightened, his head leaning against Hawks' chest. "They're perfect. You're perfect," he mumbled, his voice muffled but his sincerity unmistakable.
Hawks couldn't help but laugh, his heart warming a little at Tokoyami's unexpected, uninhibited affection. "Oh yeah? Well, thanks, buddy. You're pretty great yourself, you know."
Tokoyami looked up, blinking slowly, his eyes unfocused but wide with wonder. "R-Really?" he asked, his voice small and hopeful.
"Of course!" Hawks replied, a bit more seriously now. "You're one of the best partners I could ask for."
Tokoyami smiled, his lips a little lopsided. "Thass nice..." he slurred. He nuzzled into Hawks' chest, his eyelids growing heavier. "Best friends... Forever..."
"Best friends forever, huh?" Hawks chuckled, ruffling Tokoyami's hair. "Deal."
Tokoyami seemed content with that answer. He relaxed, his grip loosening but his head still nestled against Hawks. He sighed happily, drifting in and out of consciousness, his usually stoic self nowhere in sight.
Hawks stayed right where he was, letting Tokoyami cling to him as long as he needed to. The kid deserved it, after all.
