UA.
I spent my next shift at the library, pouring over its website. The more I saw, the more sure I was that this was the place to go to find answers.
A place where I would be able to gain access to UA's top heroes. People who were connected to the government. People who may have the power to take me back home.
Besides. If I was going to be stuck here, I figured it was better to spend my time training and pushing my powers to their limit instead of wasting away at the Midoriyas'. Even better if I could nick a scholarship; then I wouldn't even have to pay.
Announcing my news to Deku was a happy moment. He was so excited that I wanted to go he entered one of his muttering fits, thinking about all the cool things we could do together. I have to admit; I had my concerns. From what it looked like to me, it would be almost impossible for someone quirkless to get in; especially to the hero course. But Deku was smart, I knew that for sure. He'd spent years studying quirks and how they functioned. He was basically a walking encyclopedia of hero information. And I couldn't ignore how well his gym days were paying off. Bro was developing some serious muscle. I had faith in him. I would trust his ability the way he trusted mine.
It was nice to finally have a focused goal. My weeks of desperately grasping at straws, trying in vain to find some little rabbit trail that could lead me to answers and a way out of this world had left me exhausted and disoriented. Finally working towards something helped me center myself. I started getting up early to go on morning runs with Izuku. He hooked me up with a gym nearby, and so I trained. I practiced web shooting and swinging. Sometimes the two of us would go to the park and exercise. Poor Inko watched us in shock as we devoured meals, the both of us asking for seconds before she'd even taken a third bite. After a few weeks, my dreams finally started to happen less frequently.
"What are you thinking?" Deku asked one night at the park. We'd spent the whole evening training. The sun had just finished setting and I was on the ground, peeking up at the stars.
"I don't know," I said. "I guess I just miss home."
"Is it really different here?" he wondered.
I held in a laugh. "If only you knew."
"I'm sure you must miss your family. It's probably hard being away for so long, huh?" he tilted his head sympathetically.
I leaned back against the grass, folding my hands under my neck for support. "I miss the certainty of knowing that they're okay. I miss the familiarity. But honestly, in terms of family there's not that much to miss."
"What do you mean?" Deku asked.
"My family is kind of a mess," I sighed. "It's a long story. Probably not one good for a night as pretty as this one. I'll tell you another time."
"O-oh. Okay," he responded quietly.
......
"Did you pack your water bottles?" Inko called.
