My chest tightened as I stared at Deku. What was that!? Quirks develop before the age of four... It's impossible. But he just... He... I flexed my fingers, feeling a drop of sweat slip down my palm. What the hell does this mean? I wondered.
Before I could think, my body was darting forward, my fists raised, explosions nipping at my palms. I ran at Deku with full force, seeing nothing but red and his fucking wide green eyes.
"Damn you, Deku!" I screamed. "Tell me what's going on!"
I reached my hand out, prepared to knock him down with a blast, but all at once my body jerked to a stop.
"Wha-" I tried to pull forward, confused, until I felt a familiar sticky sensation on my forehead. I reached up, feeling one web wrapped around my crown, holding me back, and another around my chest.
"The hell!?" I turned my head, glaring at the blue-eyed girl who'd stopped me. "LET ME GO!"
The stupid teacher grinned, laughing at me, before beaming at her. "Nice going. I was about to stop him with my own capture weapon, but you beat me to it. Saved me from dry eyes."
She nodded, but didn't answer, her face set on me, eyes hard. "Don't touch Izuku," she snapped.
I grit my teeth. "Fucking let me go."
I felt her webs slip loose, and I yanked the remaining threads off, feeling my fingers shake with anger.
Until just a few days ago, he was only a pebble on the side of the road, I thought, glowering at the shitty nerd. Until she showed up, you were a pebble on the side of the road!
I could hardly focus on the rest of the exercises. Of course my muscle memory was good enough to get me through them without too much trouble, but all I could think about was fucking Deku.
Where had this quirk come from? I had been sure that he didn't have one. I had pushed him in the dirt countless times to make sure of it. Had he been enduring all this time, biding his time, waiting for the right moment to strike back? Had he and that Spider-Freak been laughing behind my back, entertained by my cluelessness?
Was everything all this time a lie?
"Let's quickly announce the results," our hobo-of-a-teacher said, capturing my attention once more.
There's no way Deku could catch up to me, I thought. This will prove it. He'll be expelled and that'll be that.
Eraserhead clicked the monitor on.
My eyes immediately darted to the bottom score, my heart tensing with the anticipation.
Midoriya Izuku, it read.
I let out a breath. Of course. I knew it. The damn nerd was out of his league. Quirk or no quirk, this was no place for someone as weak as him.
My eyes snapped back up to the top score.
