Song: 'Bittersuite' by Billie Eilish

——————————————————————————

The night was eerily quiet as we drove down the long, empty road. The headlights of my brother's car cut through the thick darkness, illuminating only a few feet ahead.

We were halfway home, the city's lights fading in the distance behind us, our surroundings now hushed and quiet compared to the busy streets and bright lights.

Matteo was focused, his hands gripping the steering wheel with a kind of calm that only came from years of late-night drives like this. We didn't speak—there wasn't really a need to. The rhythmic hum of the engine and the soft whooshing of the tires on the pavement were enough to fill the silence between us.

I stared out the window, my mind wandering as I watched the dark outlines of trees blur by, their shapes distorted by the speed of the car and the shadows of the night. The moon was just a sliver in the sky, casting a pale, ghostly light over everything.

It was peaceful in a way, almost lulling me into a trance. But then something broke through that peaceful haze, a flicker of movement on the road ahead, so faint I almost thought I imagined it.

But there it was again—a small, dark shape in the distance, right in the middle of the road. My breath caught in my throat, and I leaned forward, my eyes straining to see what it was. The closer we got, the more my heart started to race. It wasn't just debris or a trick of the light. It was something real, something alive.

"Stop!" I yelled, my voice cutting through the quiet of the car, startling my brother out of his focus. "Stop the car!"

He reacted immediately, slamming on the brakes with a force that sent us lurching forward in our seats. The tires screeched against the pavement as we came to an abrupt halt, the headlights now fully illuminating the small figure on the road.

"What? What's going on?" my brother asked, his voice sharp with concern, but I was already unbuckling my seatbelt, my hands fumbling with the door handle.

"There's something in the road!" I managed to get out, my heart pounding in my chest as I pushed the door open and stepped out into the cool night air. The world outside was dark and still, the kind of stillness that made everything seem more intense, more real.

My footsteps echoed on the gravel as I hurried towards the small shape lying in the middle of the road, my heart racing with a mix of fear and hope.

As I got closer, the figure started to take shape in the light of the headlights. It was small, impossibly small, and as I approached, I saw a pair of tiny, bright eyes staring back at me, wide with fear. My breath caught in my throat as I realized what I was looking at—a puppy, all alone in the middle of the road.

"Oh my God," I whispered, my voice trembling as I knelt down beside the tiny creature. It was just a baby, its fur matted and dirty, and it was shivering violently in the cold night air. The puppy was huddled in a tight ball, trying to make itself as small as possible, its little body trembling with fear.
