Mateo Delacruz

"You must be kidding me right now." I look at him, not believing him as he walks to the door. "Come on, don't sulk like that." Enzo replies, a smile forming on his lips when he looks at me. "The work needs me." He simply states, before turning his lips into a upside down smile and shrugging. "The work can wait, you need to rest." I glare at him, walking behind him anyway as he gets out of the house wearing his suit as usual.

"I promise to get the rest when we come back home." He opens the door for me, waiting for me to get inside. I take a look at him before rolling my eyes and getting in the car. His hair is pushed back as a gentle scent of perfume radiates from him.

There was no way I could change his mind. "You are so stubborn." I mutter under my breath when he sits next to me and the driver gets into his seat. "What can I say? I'm famous for that." He smirks and I just shake my head, smiling to myself.

I walk in the building following behind Enzo who has his head up with confidence. No one can tell that this man was shot a week ago by the way he is walking except for the bandages that wraps around the hand that was shot. A piece of bone broke on his hand now he had to wear a plaster on his hand.

Every step he takes, every stride makes him certain of himself. Maria was behind us, keeping a little distance from us.

Enzo slightly turns his head in my directions, his steps getting smaller and slower. He walks like that before I realize that I'm walking next to him, matching his pace. But it was the other way around. He was the one, matching my pace.

"Sorry." I quickly mumble before stopping for a second and creating a distance between us. Even if Enzo and I are not so formal out of the work, we have to stay formal at the work. And, there was no way a boss would allow his secretary or assistant to walk next to him, it was rude towards the boss and I didn't want to disrespect Enzo like that.

It is until Enzo notices and smacks his lips before turning on his heels and taking steps towards me. "Why are you walking behind me?" He mumbles, his caramel eyes studying me like no one was present in the building. "I am your assistant, I have to maintain a distance." I utter, avoiding his gaze.

"Mateo." My name rolls off his tongues and I suck in a sharp breath. After all this time, I'm still so affected by the way my name sounds off his mouth. "Non c'è distanza tra noi. Tu sei accanto a me. In ogni situazione. In qualsiasi posto. (There's no distance between us. You stand next to me. In every situation. In any place.)" His words sound so sincere as he whispers them. His deep voice making my mind blank. I look up to meet his gaze and my heart starts to pound in my chest.

I'm in love with him.
So fucking much.

I could kiss him right now but I hold back and nod before looking away.

"Let's go." He whispers before standing next to me and taking a step forward. I walk, matching his pace as the people eye us, whispering into each other's ears.

My throat dries up when my heart starts to drop in my stomach. My mind brings me the thoughts I was not ready to go through.

What will happen when the people will find out I like men? What will my parents say? What will they think about me?

It scared me. It horrified me.

My eye fall on Enzo's back as he presses the button of the elevator, thinking if he will be there to support me through all that.

The ding of the elevator brings my attention back and I blink when Maria gets out of the elevator, leaving me and Enzo in the small place, alone. Enzo tilts his head, cracking his neck as he stares out of the elevator. The only sound of the door closing and our breathings is heard in the elevator as the silence engulfs the place.
