It was 1975, with only a little time left until the end of this special period. Shi Tingyu thought that even if she couldn't avoid being sent to the countryside, she could try to find connections through her parents to ensure they were sent to a place where they had acquaintances who could offer some protection.
When Shi's parents saw their daughter awake, they asked with concern, "Are you feeling better?"
Shi Tingyu replied, "Mom and Dad, I'm feeling much better now."
Her father patted her head and sighed, "Don't worry too much. If it comes to it, you can just publicly sever ties with us, and you won't have to be sent with us."
Shi Tingyu shook her head. "I won't sever ties with you."
Her mother, anxious, said, "Why are you being so stubborn now? The days in the countryside are harsh and difficult."
After being sent to the countryside, one would live in a cow shed, perform the hardest and most exhausting labor, be publicly criticized, and might even face humiliations such as head shaving by the production team. Just thinking about the suffering her daughter might face made her feel suffocated.
Her father added, "Your mother is right. Severing ties is just a formality. As long as we're together in heart, the external things don't matter."
Shi Tingyu wasn't someone who clung to formalities. As her father said, severing ties was merely a formality. She simply felt that it had little significance to her current situation.
"Mom and Dad, even if we sever ties, at my age and without a job, I'll still end up being sent to the countryside. It's better to be with you so we can look out for each other."
Shi Tingyu wasn't deeply knowledgeable about the 1970s but had some understanding. Many young people with striking appearances were mistreated and had to submit, and some, after the college entrance exams were reinstated, were even locked away by their in-laws to prevent them from taking the exams.
Some could not endure the humiliation and committed suicide.
Additionally, considering the never-ending farm work, her delicate body might not withstand the hardship.
Given the choices, who would want to live such a life?
Upon hearing this, Shi's parents hesitated.
Her father took a deep breath and said with difficulty, "Don't lose hope. We haven't been sent away yet, and no documents have been issued. There's still time to find a solution."
Shi Tingyu encouraged, "Yes, there must be a way."
She glanced at the English documents on the table and said, "Mom and Dad, whether or not the documents are issued, these materials can't stay in the house."
"Other books, especially foreign ones, shouldn't be around. Even some literary classics need to be hidden."
Shi's parents understood this but were unsure where to hide them effectively. The search teams had experience finding hidden things, so no hiding place was truly safe.
Shi Tingyu thought of some methods for hiding things from later generations and tried to find a suitable one.
After some consideration, she didn't come up with any useful ideas. She never underestimated anyone; those people were seasoned veterans. Just because she had traveled from the future didn't mean she was more knowledgeable than people of the present.
Because of the difficult circumstances, people at present would come up with more methods, but if not thorough, the result might be disastrous.
Shi Tingyu thought to herself that it's said that time travelers have golden fingers. If she had a space for storing things, it would be ideal.
