Shi Tingyu was surprised that Lu Weiguo was still thinking about this matter.

"Actually, it's okay if you don't buy them," she said, having seen similar customs in later times. She wasn't as attached to the traditional gifts of the three-turns and one-sound.

"Watch, bicycle, sewing machine, and radio—none can be missing," Lu Weiguo said earnestly.

Seeing him so serious, Shi Tingyu replied, "If you must buy something, I think a watch will be enough."

When Lu Weiguo seemed about to argue further, Shi Tingyu took his hand and said, "There's really no need for the others. Today's bicycles are too high for me, and you already have one. As for the sewing machine, I rarely do needlework. It would just gather dust at home."

"What about the radio? You could use it at home," Lu Weiguo insisted.

Shi Tingyu admitted she wasn't fond of listening to the radio. The programs were mostly news, children's shows, or poetry readings. After coming from an era of information overload, she found them unappealing.

"Radio programs aren't to my taste. Let's wait until radios can broadcast more varied content before buying one," she said.

Seeing her genuine reluctance, Lu Weiguo abandoned the idea of buying all the items and took her to the watch counter.

In the end, Shi Tingyu chose a Shanghai-brand women's watch with a silver band. It looked elegant on her wrist.

For some, wearing a watch might seem like flaunting jewelry, but for Shi Tingyu, it complemented her perfectly. Her aura matched the watch, enhancing her overall presence.

Lu Weiguo observed Shi Tingyu's slender wrist and thought that even a thread would look good on her.

After buying the watch, Shi Tingyu forgot about it and continued with her tasks. Lu Weiguo noted that for her, a watch was likely not a rare item.

After shopping, they went to a state-owned restaurant for lunch before returning home.

In the afternoon, Lu Weiguo went back to the camp to invite people for the dinner.

In such warm-house gatherings, it was rare to invite officers to avoid gossip. When Lu Weiguo announced a dinner, the training soldiers were instantly excited at the prospect of a feast.

Zhang's wife came over upon hearing about the gathering.

"Little sister, Lu already told me. I'm here to help," she said with a smile.

Shi Tingyu gratefully thanked her, "Sister-in-law, your help is much appreciated."

Zhang's wife helped peel potatoes while Shi Tingyu directed Lu Weiguo to wash the crayfish and clams. After washing, the clams were salted and oiled to purge sand.

"Crayfish and clams are better handled by men," Shi Tingyu said.

Lu Weiguo complied and washed the seafood at the well.

Zhang's wife commented on how obedient Lu Weiguo was, "I didn't expect Lu to be so accommodating. You really have a way with him."

Shi Tingyu thought to herself that Lu Weiguo was simply a naturally obedient person, but she didn't want to brag.

Zhang's wife then mentioned her own husband, "My old Zhang just doesn't do anything unless I tell him."

Shi Tingyu noticed the fondness in Zhang's wife's expression despite her complaints. She added, "Sister-in-law, Lu mentioned that Zhang Battalion Commander always brings back something for you and the kids."

Zhang's wife's heart warmed, and she replied with a smile, "Well, that's his only redeeming quality."

Lu Weiguo, overhearing the conversation, smiled. He realized Shi Tingyu had a knack for connecting with others and could always say the right thing.

After handling the crayfish and clams, Shi Tingyu needed to prepare mushrooms, and Lu Weiguo took over the crayfish prep.

He noticed the crayfish pincers and figured it could be dangerous. Although he hadn't done this before, he quickly learned by watching Shi Tingyu. Handling the crayfish was effortless for him.

Shi Tingyu admired the sight of Lu Weiguo managing the crayfish with ease, the scene bathed in a warm, radiant light.
