Shi Tingyu returned to the house with the bowl and brought out the cakes, washing the bowl and filling it with two of her own homemade potato cakes. Her cakes were larger than usual, and two were quite enough.
When Zhang's wife saw Shi Tingyu quickly come out with a bowl, she noticed that the bowl seemed to contain more than just the cornmeal cakes she had brought. The potato cakes Shi Tingyu made were golden and shiny, with crispy edges and savory potato filling, making them look very appetizing.
"Zhang's wife, these are some potato cakes I made this morning. Please take two for your child to try," Shi Tingyu offered.
Zhang's wife, knowing that food was precious and not wanting to impose, was a bit embarrassed. "Oh, I didn't mean to take your special treats when I came to bring something."
Shi Tingyu, genuinely kind, insisted, "Zhang's wife, the weather is getting warmer, and I made extra batter. If we don't use it all at once, it might spoil."
She handed the bowl over and gently urged Zhang's wife to leave, saying she needed to finish cooking before her husband came back.
Zhang's wife smiled and left, accepting the gesture.
Back at her own home, Zhang's son, Da Mao, was already awake and washing his face. When he saw his mother return, he asked sleepily, "Mom, where did you go?"
Zhang's wife presented the bowl with the potato cakes and replied, "These are potato cakes made by the new lady next door."
Da Mao immediately stopped what he was doing and sniffed eagerly. "Mom, these smell really good!"
Zhang's wife urged him to hurry and eat while the cakes were still warm.
Da Mao quickly wiped his face and rushed to the table, grabbing a cake and taking a big bite. The crispy exterior and the flavorful potato filling made him exclaim, "Delicious!"
Zhang's wife, seeing her son devour the cakes, commented with a chuckle, "You act as if you've been starving. It's not like I never cook for you!"
Da Mao, however, thought to himself that no matter how much his mother cooked, it never compared to Shi Tingyu's cakes.
When Zhang's husband, Zhang Jin, came home, he saw his son happily eating the golden cakes and his eyes lit up. "Wife, have we got a special treat today?"
He took a bite of one of the cakes and immediately exclaimed, "So good!"
Zhang's wife hurriedly finished making the remaining cornmeal cakes and brought them to the dining room. Zhang Jin continued eating, praising Shi Tingyu's cooking skills.
Zhang's wife agreed, "Shi Tingyu's cooking is indeed exceptional. She's not only beautiful but also a great cook."
Zhang Jin was curious and asked, "Really? How pretty is she?"
Zhang's wife gestured that Shi Tingyu was far more beautiful than anyone else in the neighborhood. Zhang Jin imagined it but couldn't quite picture it.
Zhang's wife continued, "Once they've settled in properly, they'll likely host a gathering. It's a tradition here."
Zhang Jin agreed and said he would help when the time came.
Meanwhile, Shi Tingyu was glad to have some space while her husband was away. She had been hesitant to rearrange things with him around, as he was a keen observer.
Noticing her relief, Shi Tingyu's husband, Lu Weiguo, felt a pang of discomfort, realizing that she might not be as eager for his presence. He decided to give her more time to adjust, worried that any pressure might not be well-received.
