When Lu Weiguo returned home from training, he immediately noticed that the yard had changed. The previously tilled soil was now neatly divided into plots.
His wife had planted vegetables?
As soon as Shi Tingyu saw Lu Weiguo come home, she hurried to the kitchen to serve dinner.
Lu Weiguo took the bowl from her, but his hand froze when he saw her hand.
"What happened to your hand?"
Shi Tingyu didn't hide her hand. She extended it toward him and said, "I got a little sore while planting vegetables today."
Lu Weiguo set the bowl down and carefully examined her hand. The blisters were small, but they made him feel uneasy.
"From now on, let me handle these tasks."
Shi Tingyu glanced at him and noticed his serious expression, causing a slight flutter in her heart.
"If you do everything, wouldn't it mean I'm not helping you? That doesn't seem right."
Lu Weiguo reached out and tapped her on the forehead. "What are you thinking? Marriage isn't about measuring with these standards. As long as we both feel good about it, it doesn't matter how things turn out."
Shi Tingyu was satisfied with his response.
"Alright, I'll leave the heavy work to you from now on."
Lu Weiguo nodded, turned, and went to serve dinner.
At the table, Shi Tingyu asked, "Do you think I should find a job?"
Lu Weiguo paused, then asked, "Why suddenly think about working? You didn't work before we got married."
"Or are you short on money and need something?"
Lu Weiguo reconsidered; he had given her the money, so it wasn't that.
Shi Tingyu thought to herself that it was the original owner who didn't work, but she wanted to have her own job. Even though she couldn't continue her painting career right now, doing something else would be good.
She wasn't a fan of visiting and chatting, and staying home all the time felt dull.
It was fine for a short period, but over time, it might lead to the feeling that staying at home was a must, which wasn't ideal. Most importantly, not working or going out could lead to mental stagnation.
"It's just that staying at home all day makes one lose energy. Going out to work would allow me to interact with other people."
Lu Weiguo was a bit worried.
Some high-ranking officials knew about the Shi family's situation, and he feared that she might face unpleasant encounters if she went out to work.
"Do you have any particular job in mind?" Lu Weiguo asked.
Lu Weiguo's concern was clear, almost written on his face.
Shi Tingyu clarified, "I haven't decided yet. I can draw, so I could work in a promotional department or try teaching if schools are hiring."
Seeing Lu Weiguo's hesitation, Shi Tingyu added, "Don't worry, I have a high school diploma."
Lu Weiguo was genuinely surprised.
He knew Shi Tingyu had returned from abroad four years ago and had not attended school in China.
Shi Tingyu smiled and explained, "I graduated from university in the U.S. When I returned to China, my parents were concerned that the U.S. diploma might not be recognized, so I took the high school exams again and got the diploma."
Given the country's policy support for returning technical personnel, this was feasible.
"Alright, I'll ask around for you," Lu Weiguo promised. "If you don't like the job, we can always find something else."
Shi Tingyu agreed with this approach.
Since they didn't lack money now, they could switch to a job she enjoyed if needed.
The country provided job arrangements for military spouses, but opportunities were limited and competitive.
Shi Tingyu believed her skills and credentials would make it easy for her to find a job.
After dinner, Lu Weiguo took the initiative to wash the dishes. Halfway through, he remembered something he had forgotten to mention.
"Wife."
Lu Weiguo was eager, accidentally calling her "wife" out loud after mentally rehearsing it many times.
Shi Tingyu was stunned.
Lu Weiguo was also momentarily at a loss.
Clearing his throat, he continued, "Um, wife, I have something to tell you."
Having said it, Lu Weiguo felt more comfortable calling her "wife." The second time he said it, it felt more natural.
"Okay, what is it?" Shi Tingyu asked with a sweet expression.
Lu Weiguo's awkwardness disappeared when he talked about business. "I called home during training. My uncle said that your parents have arrived at the front-west battalion and are settled in."
Shi Tingyu was thrilled. "Really? That's great."
She had planned to ask Lu Weiguo to call them in a few days, but he had already taken the initiative.
She was grateful. "Weiguo, thank you."
"Couples don't need to say thank you," Lu Weiguo said seriously. "It's my responsibility. Your parents are my family too."
Shi Tingyu smiled. "I won't mention it next time."
Her eyes sparkled with gratitude.
Lu Weiguo was captivated by her gaze, finding it difficult to regain his composure.
As they went to bed, Lu Weiguo found himself reflecting on those eyes.
Having shared a bed before, they were slowly becoming more comfortable with physical closeness. Shi Tingyu no longer maintained a rigid posture, and Lu Weiguo was less formal.
They found that they often ended up touching each other after waking up.
Lu Weiguo encouraged himself, feeling that they were close to being intimate. He wondered how others had managed similar situations.
Nowadays, most marriages were based on mutual attraction after a few meetings. However, Lu Weiguo felt his relationship with Shi Tingyu was different.
He felt an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction, as if he wanted more, so he hadn't fully committed yet, opting for a gradual approach.
He wasn't sure when the right time would be, not even he knew.
Shi Tingyu, on the other hand, was pondering when this man would make a move. Was she supposed to take the initiative?
She was open to it but worried it might be too much of a shock for him.
After all, in an era where even holding hands could be criticized, would Lu Weiguo, with his stern yet gentle demeanor, handle her boldness well?
