Zayn let out a weary sigh, his throat completely dry from all the talking. He had said everything about the last eight months, barely taking the time to breathe and the therapist was really no help because she just let him talk. She let him get everything off his chest that he needed to and didn't interrupt him because he went into so much detail about everything that no explanations were necessary. The emotions he showed were almost tangible, you could see them falling from the man's soul when his eyes sparkled with anger, annoyance, affection, admiration, you could see the sparkle that showed the hurt, the regret, insight and heartache and of course you could also see the warm glow when she fought through the most important emotion of all. Love.
She had no idea how it all could have started, it happens right under everyone's noses and actually, she was really glad it had happened. The sequence of events that had happened in the last eight months shocked her but more than that she was fascinated by it. She wanted to know every little detail, every little feeling, every action, what was going through his mind when he did the things he did and the main question was, where did they go wrong?
Zayn put his hands on his thighs, fixed his gaze on the clock behind her and bit his lip. He couldn't believe he had just explained eight whole months in an hour and forty-five minutes and probably left out so much. He had just started with the night of the TCA's and kept going. He didn't care if he sounded ridiculous when he talked about his and Justin's not so romantic relationship.
"I think that's pretty much it." Zayn murmured quietly, his eyes starting to burn slightly, exhaustion slowly setting in.
The woman straightened up from her leaning forward position. "You two are definitely not Romeo and Juliet." her voice was supposed to sound teasing and light to break the tension that was building up and to make it less uncomfortable for Zayn to have just told a story that only the two lovers knew about until now.
Zayn's lips twisted into a bitter smile. "Definitely not."
The corners of her mouth also lifted in a friendly manner and she watched the young man who squirmed under her gaze, even though only a few minutes ago he had been walking around the room and telling so passionately about their last meeting in Miami, Florida.
"Zayn, I have a question for you," she began, testing whether the thoughtful man could bear it, as the question was a bit personal.
Zayn waited, nodding, for her to ask. "Do you think you and Justin could ever put the past behind you and maybe start a real relationship sometime in the future?"
Zayn's whole chest froze at the question before his heart started pumping fast and frantically again. He definitely hadn't expected this question. His eyes burned a little and his posture sank. "Seriously?" he whispered to himself, looking down at the floor in resignation.
"I don't think so. I don't think we can again. Not after everything that happened," he admitted honestly, because that was really what he felt.
"But you said yourself, Mr. Malik, that you've never felt the way you do for anyone," she argued, trying to get him to think about it again.
Zayn ran his hand through his styled hair. "Because I love him, Dr. Hamilton. But even love is sometimes not enough."
The therapist sighed deeply, nodding slowly. "You sound like you're absolutely sure. Don't you believe in the saying, love conquers all?"
Zayn looked at the woman and snorted as he shook his head in disbelief. "Of course not, and I'm a great example of what a lie that is."
The therapist looked at him amused, looked at her watch and saw that her time was almost up. However, she had one more thing to say before she let him go. "And that's exactly why you're sitting next to me today and not next to him."
