Justin
Your hand fits in mine
Like it's made just for me
But bear this in mind
It was meant to be
And I'm joining up the dots
With the freckles on your cheeks
And it all makes sense to me
I paused the song when I heard Liam's voice start to sing and let out the breath I'd been holding.
Yes, I'm listening to One fucking Direction.
Little Things, to be exact, but don't judge me.
Zayn's voice has become something of an addiction to me ever since I heard him sing his beautiful proposal song on my phone. No matter how many songs I listened to, it couldn't match the beauty and purity that I could hear on the iPhone.
Those fucking studio executives are assholes the way they auto-tune his voice, he sings fucking incredible. So much better than me and that says a lot.
His voice, the emotion it carried, the way it broke when he sang the chorus. I knew it must have hurt him when he sang it because I practically forced him. And man, I regretted doing it.
Well, I couldn't get his performance out of my head and I couldn't understand how his stupid British accent just disappeared when he started singing. How could he sound so American when he opened his fucking mouth to sing and those high notes...
My fucking life could go to hell.
His voice could reach heights I never thought were possible, he almost sounded like Mariah Carey. I could swear someone had to have surgery on his balls to be able to sing that high.
"Oh my God."
I winced, slammed my laptop shut and turned around so I could see Heidi staring at me with her mouth wide open and food in it.
"Shut your mouth, dirty girl. Didn't anyone teach you not to talk with your mouth open?" I snapped at her.
She rolled her eyes and chewed slowly as I tried to hide my laptop. I was caught fucking watching a One Direction music video! How humiliating.
"Why the hell are you watching a One Direction music video?" she demanded, crossing her arms and grinning.
"Just wanted to see what my opponents at the VMA's were like." I growled.
"Bullshit." she snorted.
My heart started beating faster as I imagined she might find out that I watched countless One Direction videos.
"Don't tell me you couldn't help but stare at your wifey the whole time." she said, grinning.
Now I snorted. "Please! I'm just gathering facts so I can tease him a little the next time I have to call him."
She grumbled. "What song were you listening to?"
I shrugged. "Small Things." I lied.
She rolled her eyes. "It's called Little Things, you idiot." She sighed. "You really are an idiot."
I cracked my knuckles. "What's the difference? Small? Tiny? Little? They all mean the same thing. And besides, these guys all need someone who loves THEIR 'little things'." I giggled.
"You've definitely never seen Liam's dick." She muttered.
My eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
"Woah! And how do you know that?! He's in London with Zayn!" I gasped. "You didn't...!"
Heidi covered her face with one hand and whined, "Oh, god, Justin! Shut up!"
"Young lady, give me your phone! I'm going to have to tell Liam not to send you dick pictures he got from Google!" I held out my hand.
She slapped at me, her cheeks flaming red. "We're not sending each other naked pictures, you idiot! If I want to see his dick, I'm going to see it with my own eyes!"
I grumbled, "Yeah, okay, I believe you." And lunged at her to get to her bag and fish the phone out.
"Justin, get off me!" Heidi screamed, trying to free herself from my grip as I reached into her back pocket and pulled out the phone. Once I had her phone in my power, I barricaded myself in the bathroom.
"Hey! Give it back, you asshole!" she whined, but of course I was faster than her, so I slammed the door behind me and locked it.
I grinned and unlocked her phone, which was pretty easy since she didn't have a code inside.
"Naive, stupid girl. Didn't anyone teach you to always lock your phone?" I teased as she yelled from the other side of the door.
I immediately went to her contacts and found Liam's contact under Leeyuuuum Payner.
"Leeyum Payner, really, Heidi, that's pathetic." I shouted to her through the door.
"I'll kill you if I get my hands on you! You're a fucking asshole!" she screamed and banged on the door, cursing herself.
I rolled my eyes and grinned, time for some fun.
I waited for his number to dial and immediately I heard a deep voice, with the wonderful British accent.
"Hey, beautiful." Liam greeted me.
"Really, thank you Liam, you made my day." I snorted.
"Justin? What happened to me Heidi? Is she okay?!"" he asked immediately.
"She's fine, I just had some worries and needed to talk to you," I started to scoff, "I called you and I'm talking to you now, like a best friend should, and I don't appreciate you emailing or messaging my best friend with penises you got from the internet."
"What?! What are you talking about?! I never sent her any nude photos!" he interrupted me.
"But, but, Liam. I know my best friend is really attractive, but I don't want you to just trample on her innocence like that. She's still a virgin after all." I said, even though I knew she was far from innocent and let's not even talk about her virginity.
"S-she's a virgin?" he stuttered.
I grinned, man, that was fun!
"DON'T BELIEVE A SINGLE WORD HIM SAYS, LIAM!" Heidi shouted through the door and I was pretty sure Liam heard her.
Liam giggled. "Are you playing a prank on her? Typical, Justin."
"Damn, I was actually trying to prank you too, man!"
"You're really worth a laugh. Well, now I've got you on the phone and she's not within earshot. I have to ask you something serious." His voice was muffled and calm now, but I could detect a hint of nervousness behind it.
"Yeah? Go on, man." I replied.
He cleared his throat. "I wanted to ask you for your permission to date Heidi. You're the one closest to her, like a brother or father."
My eyes widened, if she hadn't told him about Beck, there had to be a reason. But I didn't want to tell him because it wasn't my business.
"You're seriously asking me for my permission?!"
"Yeah, and it would be really great if I had your permission. You're her best friend, Justin, you're the one she talks about all the time. About you two, your pranks, jokes, games, fights or adventures on the Believe tour. You're her best friend and I know your approval would mean a lot to her. You know what I mean." He said.
My heart swelled. I knew I was a really close friend of hers, her best friend, but damn, I never knew she talked about me so much. And he was right, we really took off on that tour. I'm so glad I met her. She is the coolest, funniest, best friend I could ever have. And that guy, he was a really, really good guy.
"Why are you banking so much on my approval? Shouldn't you be dating her if I hated you?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood a little.
"I have two older sisters. Women want their best friends to like the guy they're dating, if they don't, it's pretty much pointless even trying. I don't want you to actually talk bad about me so Heidi turns away from me, or discourage her from dating me. I want your blessing."
I cleared my throat. "Man, Liam, you're a really proper guy. Most guys wouldn't give a shit, including me. You make the rest of us guys look like inconsiderate fuckers."
He laughed out loud. "I'm going to take that as a compliment now, because it sounded like one to me."
I smiled. "Take care of her, Liam. She deserves a stable relationship. She deserves someone who admires her and treats her like a princess. I, Justin Drew Bieber, hereby give you, Liam Payne, my permission to date my best friend, Heidi Gaudalupe Springsteen."
"Thank you, Justin. That means a lot to me and will mean a lot to Heidi too. She speaks so highly of you, she really loves you, man." And Liam didn't sound jealous at all, he sounded like he tolerated it and was genuinely happy for me.
"And I love her, you don't have to worry about me getting in your way. Heidi is like my little sister I never had." I confessed lovingly.
I laughed. "I was never worried. I want to ask you something else, Justin."
"Anything else? Damn Liam, if you're tired of singing, you should consider becoming an interviewer." I joked.
He chuckled. "I'll think about it." His accent shone through clearly and reminded me of Zayn's accent. It was so different from Liam's. Liam's was really deep and friendly, and he also spoke pretty fast, like a stockbroker.
"Well, I haven't spoken to Zayn since we took a short break, and normally, I wouldn't worry about it, but lately he's been so self-absorbed and withdrawn. I'm just curious if you've talked to him in the last week." He said.
"You haven't talked to him in a week?!"
"Hey! Come on down, we use our breaks to go to our families or old friends, but just before, he was quieter than normal." He defended himself.
Quiet?! "Are we talking about the same person here? The Zayn I know is pretty argumentative, snappy and sarcastic." I replied. Wifey was never quiet, not even close! He always had something to say. He was always shouting, hitting back or cursing like a sailor.
"Wait, so you talked to him?" Liam asked me.
I cleared my throat. "Yeah, like two nights ago?"
"How was he? Is he okay?" he asked immediately.
"GIVE ME MY FUCKING PHONE, JUSTIN!" Heidi screamed.
"Let me go! I'm talking to Liam! Not about you!" I screamed back.
"Justin! How is he?" Liam repeated, his voice worried and demanding.
I swallowed. "He's fine, he's still sarcastic and annoying like always, why?"
"Has he talked to you about this special time of year?" he asked hesitantly, as if a little scared to hear the answer.
"You mean to ask me if he talked about his grandfather's death? And how guilty he feels for not being there with him?" I whispered, my heart aching a little as I remembered that night. Zayn was an emotional wreck, I could hear him sobbing through the phone.
"Wait," he spat. "He talked to you about the X Factor?!"
I nodded. "He told me everything. Including that none of you guys paid him any attention or asked him how he was. He was so mad at you."
Liam gasped. "We knew, we knew what that day meant to him. And how he was feeling. But we kept our distance, we knew it was an irritable and sensitive time for him. But he told you everything?" "
That was a stupid thing to do! He was almost crying out for help, for some affection or understanding. Why else would he ignore his mother's calls? He blames himself, Liam!" I explained.
Liam remained silent. "So that's why he ignored her? Justin, did you actually realize what was going on with him?!"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "What are you getting at?"
Liam sighed deeply, but then laughed slightly. "Justin, he opened up to you. Something he never does, Justin. He's never spoken to us about it since one of the XFactor stage managers told us he'd left the show in a hurry to go to his grandfather's funeral. And when he came back, he didn't talk about it. Ever. And it's been years now and he still hasn't told us anything. And now, he's told you, Justin. This is some kind of breakthrough. It means he trusts you, more than any of us."
My heart leapt. "No, I just asked him what was wrong and he practically screamed it in my face." I argued, but my heart swelled with pride and warmth.
Liam sighed. "No, we asked him a thousand times what was wrong and he never said a word. He just looked at us funny or said he was fine. That was more than persistence on your part, Justin. It's something bigger."
My eyebrows continued to furrow but my pulse quickened. "I think it was just the timing that he was so close to telling someone and I was the one who called him at that time."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," he gave up trying to convince me. "Speaking of which, you woke me up at 5:30 in the morning. I'm on break and I'm exhausted." He yawned.
"I'll give the phone to Heidi. Goodnight, Liam." I replied.
"Goodnight, Justin. Thank you for looking after my friend and bandmate, thank you for being there for him when he doesn't let us." He whispered.
I didn't answer, I just opened the door, where Heidi was waiting, glaring at me. She ripped the phone out of my hand and hit me on the back of the head, but I paid no attention.
My heart hurt, something it hadn't done since Selena broke up with me. My heart jumped in my chest and I felt like I was on the verge of a heart attack.
No, it couldn't be true, Liam had just messed with me back. Zayn must have revealed himself to them first.
But my heart didn't listen to the excuses, it beat fast and loud against my ribcage and it wanted it to be true. My heart got used to the idea that I was the one Zayn was confiding in.
And Liam let it be known that Zayn was a quiet, isolated and depressed emo kid, but in reality, he was a sarcastic, funny, witty, easily agitated, joking and obnoxious asshole.
Did that really mean that Zayn was himself with me?
And why did my heart jump so happily at that question?
