(Day 390)
Stan couldn't seem to escape him now.
Sure, they worked together most days, but Kenny seemed to be at his and Kyle's apartment at least once a week lately. And, game night at Cartman and Clyde's was another night of torture for Stan.
The universe was shoving them together, and he couldn't figure out why the torment was never ending. Stan tried his damndest to work on things with Wendy, yet she only seemed to pull away more, and more. He couldn't figure it out. Though, it didn't help that Kyle felt more inclined to invite Kenny over after finding out she was jealous.
When Stan was in the zone, completely focused on work, he forgot about all of his problems. Losing himself in the busiest part of the night was the best he'd felt in months. Even when he realized that, for once, he had a smile on his face, Stan kept up his focus. Everyone was too busy stressing out to even say a word in the kitchen - which was a rarity that he appreciated. Usually, the line would be cracking jokes, or blasting music, but they were as focused as Stan was. Even Kenny looked moderately uncomfortable, like there was something more on his mind.
Damnit, Marsh! Stan growled to himself as he grabbed an extremely hot plate in the window. Still managing to set the plate on the awaiting tray, he shook off the seething pain. Kenny noticed, and caught his eye. Why'd he have to see? Jesus Christ..
Sending him a small, dismissive smile, Stan lifted the tray to his shoulder, and continued to the dining room. He was glad to get away. The more distance between him and Kenny, the better. It would be healthier for Stan if he could accept the fact that Kenny would never feel the same.
After he made sure his last table was happy with their food, he caught sight of Tolkien and Wendy talking at the bar. Stan had noticed it more lately. Something wasn't right, his stomach was in knots at the scene. They were innocently talking, it appeared, but Stan felt his fist clench almost instinctively.
So, despite his initial thoughts of the night, Stan decided to go talk to Kenny.
It was less of an actual decision, and more of an impulse. Tolkien was a dick, he knew how to get under Stan's skin. Wendy didn't have any reason to be flirting with his least favorite person like that - it was a betrayal.
Since his last table was eating, and they wouldn't need anything for the next few minutes, Stan stomped out of the back door where everyone typically took their smoke breaks. Forgetting that he'd gone into the kitchen with the intent of finding Kenny, he was surprised to find himself, and the blonde outside. Suddenly the fresh air felt suffocating. Stan elected to hold his breath instead, and sat next to him on the broken piece of concrete twenty feet from the door. It'd been a long night for everyone in the restaurant, he could tell Kenny wasn't in the best mood.
The silence was pleasant, though. It helped Stan to gather his thoughts before he foolishly talked about the wrong thing. He wasn't about to ruin all of this. There were many more important things than his stupid feelings.
"You good?" Stan started casually as he twiddled with a loose string from his apron.
Hitting his cigarette less frequently than he normally would, Kenny blinked a few times at the question. He wasn't asked things like that often enough. "Oh yeah, I'm fine."
The sarcasm wasn't lost on him. "Hm, sure." Stan rolled his eyes, but a small smile tugged at his lips. "I'll bitch first - Tolkien is flirting with Wendy. She knows I hate him."
Suddenly a bit more engaged, Kenny lifted an eyebrow: "Well, that's shitty." He still wasn't himself. "You gonna be alright?"
It wasn't something he thought about too much. Stan didn't feel the same happiness that he guessed he should've in a relationship this long, and the only reason their flirting bothered him was because it was Tolkien. He wanted to be happy with her, like Kyle was happy with David, but she didn't see him. She didn't know him. If she did, she wouldn't talk to Tolkien. He didn't even think he made her happy anymore.
