"do you think those two can handle themselves?"

wooyoung, who had been absentmindedly fiddling with an unopened protein bar, finally tore his gaze away from the wrapper to glance at ji-eun. she was behind the wheel, a slight, amused smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.

the two of them were on their way back into their collided world, a mission to retrieve clothes and other necessities for the group. their stay in this new slice-of-life world required some adjustments, and since hwayoung and san had no idea what to expect, wooyoung and ji-eun had volunteered—or rather, been volunteered—to handle the task.

the romance leads, hwayoung and san, had been left behind to wait in the hotel lobby. it wasn't just any hotel, though— it was the cheapest option they could find. after all, it was the action leads who were footing the bill.

"they'll be fine," wooyoung replied, his tone casual, almost dismissive. he tore his gaze from ji-eun and let it drift out the window, watching the cityscape pass by in a blur of muted colours. "it's only 30 minutes, and they're not helpless. plus, didn't hwayoung mention she's been taking self-defense classes from you? shouldn't you trust your own teaching if you're so confident in your skills?"

ji-eun scoffed. "since when did you get so sharp with your words?" she teased. "but yeah, you're right. they'll manage, even if your guy is a bit... soft around the edges."

wooyoung stilled his hands, the protein bar now forgotten as he considered ji-eun's words. it was true that san, compared to the three of them, was defenceless in many ways.

usually, wooyoung would've readily agreed with ji-eun's assessment—after all, it was a factual statement, and wooyoung had never been one to shy away from the truth. but this time, something inside him bristled. maybe it was because san wasn't just anybody to him now; he was his boyfriend. the casual way ji-eun had referred to san's perceived weaknesses irked him, even though he knew she didn't mean any harm.

"he can take care of himself," wooyoung declared, his voice firmer than before as he set the protein bar down. he managed to hold back the urge to launch into a tirade, knowing it would only amuse ji-eun more.

ji-eun chuckled again, the sound light and airy. there was a spark in her eyes when wooyoung glanced at her, a mischievous glint that made him shake his head. she kept her gaze on the crowded road ahead, her fingers drumming a steady rhythm on the steering wheel.

meanwhile, wooyoung turned his attention back to the world outside, where the scenery whirred by slowly.

"what do you really think of this new genre?" ji-eun asked after a comfortable pause, a beat of silence that wooyoung had almost wished would stretch on a little longer.

"it's okay," wooyoung responded, nodding slowly. his voice lacked any enthusiasm, weighed down by the fatigue that had settled in his bones. all he really wanted was to get their errands done and go to bed.
