I woke up with a pounding headache. My memory was fuzzy after the incident but this dream played on repeat- except it was more like a fear of memory. It was something that I couldn't recall happening yet but was so strangely familiar.
I got up and looked in the mirror. My blond hair was a dirty blond nest with feathers strewn about. My blue eyes were dull and tired.
I grabbed a brush and got all the tangles out of my hair. Once I was done it fell in wavy streams down to my shoulders. The feather on the top of my head laid flat against my scalp.
I stretched my brown wings. Their color was ironic considering my name, Dove, my wings being completely unlike the small white birds that absentmindedly sit in trees.
I flew down the ladder leading to the little ledge I used as a room. I creaked open my uncle's door. We weren't biologically related but he was the closest thing to family I had. I saw the fifty year old human peacefully asleep.
I love Sundays. It's the one day he has off so I always try to make it special. He is also one of the only humans living in Sanctuary. Most humans tend to stay in towns or the big human cities. Sanctuary is, well, a sanctuary for magical creatures.
I closed the door and got to work. I opened the door to the cage where we keep the feathered serpents. I put a dead mouse in the corner to distract them. Then I raided the nests for all of their eggs.
I got the stove running and put a pan on. Once it heated up I cracked the eggs on the counter and opened them over the pan. I put six pieces of toast in another pan and cooked each side evenly. I then cut avocado and sprinkled it in the pixie seasoning. I put the avocado on the toast and eggs on the side.
I grabbed the tray and entered my uncle's room. "Hey Uncle Andrew," I shook him lightly. "I made breakfast." He opened his eyes slowly and sat up.
"Dove, sweety, you know you don't have to do this every Sunday." He said, hugging me and patting my head. He had white skin with dark brown eyes. His beard was larger due to him deciding not to shave it.
"I know but I want you to be able to enjoy your day off." I smiled and gave him his breakfast.
I decided I would let him enjoy that on his own and eat my own at the table. We had a sizable apartment on the second floor. The large living room had a tv that took up most of the wall. Our kitchen was pretty small, on the other hand.
The color scheme of the entire apartment was a dreary white color. The loft was installed when I came in so I didn't have to sleep on the couch.
I don't remember how I got here, but I do remember the long days I would watch Tv and wait for my uncle to return.
I stepped out onto the balcony and looked over the city. It consisted of a wall around the city and an electric mesh net high above to stop anyone from leaving or anyone from entering. It was safer that way. No one can hurt us.
Inside the wall however, was a thriving ecosystem. Along the wall was a sizable forest for the wild Morphs, like dragons and griffins. There was a sizable lake near the north entrance that made the waterways that separate the different areas.
There was a river separating the forest from the city. The city consists of twenty-seven story buildings, give or take a floor. Most of these had garden rooftops.
We had learned how to grow self-sufficient in recent years. But this place once was reliant on humans. Many of the intelligent Morphs think that this place is a prison, but it keeps us safe from humans and the less tame dangers of the outside world.
A nest of cockatrice was necked in the overhanging covering the balcony. Uncle doesn't like them but I left my plate on the little table out there for them to finish off the crumbs.
I went back inside and my uncle was sitting on the couch. "Hey, what should we do today?" I ran up and asked him. He sighed and looked back at me. He put a scarred hand on my head.
"Hey, my little birdie, I got a call from work. We are really busy working on something and they need me to head in. Sorry little one." he said looking at me.
"Oh it's ok, that's fine. Next week though, right?" I asked hopefully.
"I don't know Dove." he shook his head. His brown hair flopped a little. "I'm really busy so my boss decides when I head in, sorry." he said. "But I did make you a picnic." he tilted his head toward the counter where a small container was inside of a blue cloth with a water bottle.
"Thanks, I think I'll head out to the lake." I waved to him on the balcony with the parcel in hand. I got up on the railing and jumped. I was in a dive for a while enjoying the air rushing past my face. Right before I crashed into a building I opened my large wings.
My direction was reversed and I launched up a little. The vents in the buildings provided the perfect updrift for me to glide on. I saw the forest with its large wall.
I looked down at the crystal clear water as I spiraled down to the shore. I beat my wings as I landed, sending ripples through the mirror like lake.
I sat down on the pebbly shore making sure not to get too close to the water because the naiads and sirens had a nasty habit of trying to drown anyone close enough to the water.
However, there was a nice one. The water rippled as a young siren popped out of the pond. She walked up to me and gave me a hug. Her copper skin was wet and made her curly hair cling to her face. "I wasn't expecting you today." she said, pulling back from the hug.
"Oh yeah! Uncle had to go to work on his day off." I shrugged. "But let's not worry about that now, Sapphire."
We sat down and started to skip stones across the pond. I took a while to explore before I decided to eat. I sat down and untied the knot in the piece of cloth.
When I did I saw a blue tupperware with a sandwich in it. I handed half to Sapphire. We ate the sandwich and drank from the bottle of water I brought with me.
Eventually, I started to feel my eyelids getting heavy. And I saw Sapphire's eyes close and open a few times and fall asleep. I heard a twig snap and tried to stand up but tipped over and blacked out.
My eyes were closed as I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Hey, little birdie, what are you doing all the way out here?"
I felt no hostility coming from him as I opened my eyes.
The man speaking to me had white skin and dark brown eyes.
His brown hair fell loosely on his head and looked in need of a haircut.
He had a scraggly beard that needed to be shaved.
"Here, let's get you somewhere safe." he picked me up and looked at my arm.
"The world is filled with cruel people but I got you." he then put me in the back of a car.
We drove a long way.
Eventually I saw a big stone wall in the middle of a field with nothing surrounding it.
