I ran in and grabbed Sapphire, pulling her away from Cobalt. Luna inspected Cobalt’s wounds. Sapphire and Cobalt had some small scrapes and scratches but nothing too bad.
“What the hell were you two thinking!” I scolded them. Especially for fighting in front of Luna. She was the purest one out of us and I intended to keep it that way.
“She called Luna a rat!” Cobalt growled, still being held back by Luna.
“I'm sorry ok. I lost my temper because of those stupid clothes!” she growled back.
“Stop fighting both of you! We need to get along! I don't care what I'm called so long as it's not a bad word!” Luna cried.
“Look, I'm sure we are all hungry. Let's get some food. Luna, you go get some food from the garden. Cobalt: cut them. Sapphire… i’m not trusting you with sharp objects yet, so you find some flint. I'll get the jars to cook with.”
We managed to start a fire as I quickly grabbed some of the spices and seasoned them. She then ladled the stew into the jars since they were the only things we could use to hold anything.
I handed them out to everyone as we all decided to eat. Luna untied Cobalt’s blindfold for him to be able to eat easier. That's when I noticed small scars around his eyes. Also the first time I saw Luna gently touch them as she pulled the blind fold away.
“This is really good.” Sapphire's voice snapped me out of my trance.
“Oh thanks.” I responded as I ate. The flavors flooded our mouths as we had our first proper meal in days.
“You know what, we haven't been trusting each other. We need to learn more about each other so we can bond” Luna said randomly.
“This is stupid.” Sapphire retorted.
“I think it's a good idea.” I jumped to Luna's side. I did catch the small glare Sapphire gave me.
“Why not.” Cobalt agreed
“Great ok i'll go first.” Luna chirped. “ I'm Luna and I like my friends and food. I've been told I'm very loyal and cheerful. I don't like blood. Its scent hurts my nose. Cobalt your turn.”
He sighed. “My name is Cobalt. I like my sister and the sun. I don't like social interaction. Dove your turn.”
“I'm Dove. I like long flights and taking care of my friends and family. I've been told I'm overly protective and smart. Sapphire, it's your turn. I know you don't want to do it but you have to.”
“Fine. I like swimming and training. You idiots all know my name. I don't like showing emotion. I hate my dad.” I realized too late that the reason she doesn't like talking to people is because she's been raised not to. She went to the pond and swam to the bottom while we finished the meal in silence.
A few hours later Sapphire was back out of the pond. She was sitting on a rock sewing some reddish cloth and embroidering swirling patterns and feathers on it.
Luna sat with cobalt in the cave and I trained on my flight speed. It was hard to fly in this space since I could clear the area in three wing beats but I figured it out.
Lunna ran out of the cave with cobalt close behind. “They're coming! Hide your stuff!” she yelled and Sapphire quickly hid the cloth behind a rock as I landed. Once we were all together two of the men dressed in suits walked in.
“The gathering is in a week. We will come get you so make sure you are prepared.” They said before abruptly leaving.
“What the heck is a gathering?” Sapphire spat, seeing Luna and Cobalt clearly ecstatic.
“A gathering is the one day a year when you get to talk with other teams and humans. Best part is we get to wear fancy clothes!” Luna said, bouncing up and down like an excited little kid.
“Luna, that's not why they are important. They are so we can size up the competition. Also if someone decides they like our team and how our team looks they will get us out of the arena, if we survive that is.” Cobalt said with a small smile.
“We also get to eat a bunch of pastries!” Luna said, bouncing around.
“Wait so we could be free if we impress someone.” Sapphire asked.
“Correct and judging by Dove's performance last round I think we have a shot. From now on try to make it more of a show.” Cobalt answered.
“We should get some rest then.” I said , flapping my wings and ushering everyone to bed. We all curled up under the blanket using my wings as padding.
Luna and Cobalt slept close to each other. His tail curled around hers as if to keep them from being separated. It was cute. They slept to my left while sapphire slept on my right, sleeping on her side and facing away from everyone.
I closed my eyes and fell into another memory.
“Mom, why do they all look so sad?” I asked my mom, pointing at the harpies and dragons.
“They don't understand that this is the best place for creatures like them.” She answered and kept walking, pulling me through the zoo.
After a while we went to the gift shop and mom bought me a harpy plush. It had black hair and gray wings. I named it flower.
I took that doll everywhere. To the park, to my friends house, even to school.
One day it got lost. I was sad for a while but eventually forgot all about it.
I was playing with my friends when I found it again. I was so happy.
But my friends thought it was dumb and childish to have it so I ended up throwing it away. I wanted to keep my friends more than I wanted to hold on to those memories.
Eventually we stopped hanging out because they became popular and I was the shy quiet nerd kid.
They said I wasn't cool enough to hang out with them. I wanted to join them so badly but I didn't.
I wish I kept the doll instead of changing things to make them happy.
I told my mom and we cut my hair which I had grown out because they wanted me to.
We changed my clothes back to the bright colors they once were.
Turns out my mom grabbed the plush out of the garbage and held onto it all this time. I got it back.
Eventually I found friends who liked the same things as me. Though i saw my old friends everyday i was forgetting about them.
Me and my new friends stuck together. Every once and a while one would move but for the most part we were inseparable.
Ady. My first real friend was the one I killed the day I turned into a harpy.
She was the one who was there for me.
She introduced me to the others.
But when i should have been there for her and comfort her instead i murdered her in cold blood.
I was floating in darkness again. I got to my feet and noticed the water. Raven comes back, the playful grin still gone.
“You shouldn't have seen that.” He looked sad
“I need to know what happens to me.” I responded.
“That's not important. You can't catch anyone's eye at the gathering.” His face turned panicked.
The first time I saw him scared.
