"Hey, Jay!"

"Good morning," he replied.

"What are you reading today?" she asked.

"It's a collection of short stories. I find it refreshing to read something concise but thought-provoking."

"Sounds interesting. Maybe I should try something like that sometime. You know, you've got pretty good taste in books."

Jay raised his eyebrow.

"Thank you. I could recommend some if you're interested."

"I'd love that! Maybe you could lend me one of your favourites?"

"Sure. I'll bring one tomorrow."

During lunchtime, Ain decided to take a leap of faith. Instead of sitting with her usual group of friends, she grabbed her lunch and approached Jay, who was sitting alone at a corner table.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked.

"Yes, sure."

Ain sat down and immediately noticed that Jay had his lunch neatly organized in front of him.

"Jay, can I ask you something?"

"What is it?"

"What made you so interested in books? I mean, you seem to have this deep connection with them, more than just a hobby."

Jay paused.

"Books have always been a constant in my life. When things were difficult, or when I felt out of place, books gave me a sense of belonging. They offer answers to questions I didn't even know I had. And sometimes, they're a better companion than people."

"Do you ever feel like you don't belong?" she asked.

"Sometimes. But it's not something I dwell on. I focus on what I can control—my studies, my goals. It's easier that way."

"Well, for what it's worth, I'm glad I got to know you. I think you're an interesting person, Jay," she said sincerely.

"Thank you, Ain. I suppose... I'm glad too."

Ain realized that once Jay felt comfortable, he was actually quite engaging in his own way. He might not be the most expressive person, but he had a quiet steady presence that made her feel at ease.

As they packed up to head to their next class, Jay suddenly spoke up.

"Ain.."

"Yes?"

"Thank you for... being patient with me. I know I'm not always easy to talk to."

She shook her head.

"You don't have to thank me for that, Jay. I'm just glad we're getting to know each other better. You're not as distant as you think—you're just... unique, in a good way."

Jay seemed to take in her words, and for a moment, it looked like he was about to smile, but he held it back. Instead, he gave her a small nod, as if acknowledging her sincerity.
