In the morning, Ain sat at her desk and her phone buzzed. It was a message from Jay.
"Can we talk? I need to tell you something important."
She immediately called him.
"Hey."
"Jay? What's wrong??"
"It's official. My dad accepted the position here in Seoul. We're not coming back to Busan."
"What?! You're... not coming back at all??"
"I'm sorry, I wanted to tell you in person, but.. things are moving fast here. My family's settled in already, and I'll be finishing school in Seoul."
Ain pressed a hand to her chest, trying to breathe.
"Why didn't you tell me?? I thought... I thought we still had time."
"I didn't want to worry you. I was hoping something would change, that maybe my dad would reconsider, but it's done. We're here for good now."
His words pressed down on Ain, making it hard to breathe.
"So... what happens now?" What about us??"
"I don't know, I want us to keep trying. I really do.. but things are going to get harder, Ain. School is different here, I'm getting busier, and I... don't know how often I can visit."
"I don't care how hard it is, we can make it work, Jay.. we've come this far. I don't want to lose you.."
"I don't want to lose you either, but.. I don't want to hurt you either. What if things change? What if we drift apart??"
"Then, we fight for it. We've always found a way, Jay.. we'll figure it out, no matter how hard it gets."
"Okay, we'll keep trying.. I'll do whatever it takes."
Ain smiled through her tears.
"I'll come visit you soon, I promise.."
"I'll be waiting.."
