"No wait please don't tell anybody." She asked quietly. "Atlas, you're freaking out. Why can't I thought?"

"Because I just, I don't like my birthday. It's always so bad and somebody's always trying to kill me." She sits down at the end of the bed, so I kneeled, resting my hand on her thigh.

"I understand that you've had bad experiences. Really I do. But I just think that if you give it a chance then you'll have a good day. I just think that a day like this should be celebrated- have you ever celebrated your birthday?"

"My dad did- or he tried. It was always such a mess. But I just don't want anybody else to get stuck in that mess." I kissed the back of her hand. "If anybody tries to ruin your birthday, I'll kill them myself. Now- you can, keep it secret and I will one hundred percent help you with that. But you're safe."

"I also just don't really want the attention." She whispered. "Okay. But you have attention in you all the time. Constantly."

"Yeah. I don't know. I think I'm just being difficult." She says quietly. "Not at all. You're allowed to have feelings, doesn't make you difficult. But I did, already buy you like a whole bunch of things, like a month ago apparently. So if these have significance then I'm afraid I will know nothing."

"A month ago?" I shrugged. "Apparently I was planning ahead. I did, get you some flowers. I did not ask you your favourite because I forgot. I just walked past and I saw them."

"That's okay. Any flowers are good." I reach over for the bag, pulling it over. "I got you lilies. I got you red ones, I would've gotten the blue ones but I don't know how much you like blue and I really did not want to get you just a whole bunch of blue because that- sounds like a nightmare. But I got you these."

"These are my favourite." She holds them carefully, her smile growing as she looked at me. "Thank you."

"Yeah of course. Okay. Did you want me to give you your presents alone or out there?" I shook her head. "Alone."

"That's fine. John doesn't like his birthday either so we just pretend. Treat him the same but give him less work to do and then a little bouquet of daisies. He loves it."

"That's so sweet." She sets the flowers down, my head was pounding for some reason. Worse than usual. "Okay. There was a note here somewhere- there. Got it."

"A note?" She squints. "Yeah I don't know. Apparently I give notes now. Anyway, the note says 'I'm sorry if I got a couple of these wrong, I've been collecting these since we met and I'm not always there when we talk. I'll give you these in private and you can decide whether or not you want your birthday.' Weird."

"Weird? You wrote it. A month in advance by the way." I set the note down. "I know. Strange. Surprised you haven't kicked me out."

"I think it's sweet." I stand up from the floor, kissing her forehead. "I will get your things."

"Can I ask a question?" I nod from behind her like an idiot. "Yeah."

"Why did you get me lilies?" I push the bag over toward her. "I don't know. You remind me of lilies. Specifically the red ones. I knew that going in so I just got them."

"So you really didn't know my favourite flower?" She asked, seeming like she was questioning it. "I swear. I didn't know. I guess somewhere it's in there."

"Are you okay?" I move my hand from my head. "Yeah my head hurts."

"We could always move on and you could sleep." She smiled. "Yeah? You're funny. Okay, open." I hold up the first one. "This one is from John actually. They put them all in the bag."
