After a long and grueling practice session, Y/N finally made her way back home. The familiar, comforting sight of her house greeted her, and she was soon welcomed by her mother and little brother, Haruto. They chatted animatedly about their day over dinner, the conversation light and filled with familial warmth. It was a welcome reprieve from the intensity of volleyball practice, and Y/N found solace in the comforting normalcy of home life.
Once dinner was finished, and the dishes were cleaned up, Y/N excused herself and retreated to her room. The exhaustion from the day was evident, and she sank onto her bed with a sigh. As she reached for her phone, she felt a mix of anticipation and curiosity. The conversation with Kuroo had left her with lingering thoughts, and she was eager to see where it might lead.
She opened her chat with Kuroo, hesitating for a moment before deciding to send a message. The last text she had sent him had gone unanswered, and she wasn't sure if she should follow up. After a deep breath, she typed out a quick message.
Y/N: Hey Kuroo, just checking in. How's everything on your end?
She set her phone aside and began to unwind from the day's events. Her thoughts drifted to the practice session, the playful banter with the team, and her recent interactions with Kuroo. She was intrigued by his sudden interest and wondered about his motivations.
A few minutes later, her phone buzzed with a reply from Kuroo.
Kuroo: Hey Y/N! Sorry for the delay. I've been caught up with some stuff. How was practice today?
Y/N felt a wave of relief wash over her. She quickly typed back.
Y/N: It was good. We had a productive session. How about you?
Their conversation flowed naturally, with Kuroo sharing updates about his own activities and Y/N providing insights into the day's practice. It was light and easy, and Y/N appreciated the distraction from her thoughts.
After a few exchanges, Kuroo sent a new message.
Kuroo: By the way, is it okay if I call you for a bit?
Y/N hesitated. The thought of a phone call felt more intimate than text messages, and she wasn't sure how to respond. Yet, there was a part of her that was curious about the conversation and willing to take the chance. She took a deep breath and accepted the call.
The phone rang, and soon Kuroo's voice came through the speaker, warm and familiar. "Hey, Y/N. Thanks for picking up. I didn't want to leave things hanging without asking."
"Hey, Kuroo," Y/N replied, her tone calm and composed. "No problem."
They began with casual conversation, discussing the recent practice session and sharing thoughts on their respective teams. Kuroo's genuine interest in Y/N's perspective was evident, and their discussion flowed smoothly.
"So," Kuroo said after a while, "I've been wondering—why didn't you continue playing volleyball? You seem really passionate about it."
The question caught Y/N off guard, and she fell silent for a moment. The inquiry touched on something deep and personal, and she felt a pang of hesitation. Kuroo's voice broke the silence. "Sorry if that's too personal. I didn't mean to—"
"No, it's okay," Y/N said softly. "I don't mind sharing."
She took a moment to collect her thoughts. "Back in middle school, my team won the nationals. We achieved everything we had set out to do, and I felt like I had reached the peak of my volleyball career. I didn't see the point in continuing."
Kuroo listened attentively, sensing there was more to the story. "And...?"
Y/N sighed, her voice steady. "There's another reason. I used to date a volleyball player who was in high school while I was still in middle school. At first, things seemed fine, but he eventually cheated on me. He told me that I was too boring and cold, which hurt a lot."
Kuroo's tone became softer, filled with empathy. "I'm really sorry to hear that. It must have been incredibly tough."
Y/N nodded, though Kuroo couldn't see her. "It was. It shattered me, but I tried to stay composed. I decided to switch schools because I needed a fresh start."
Kuroo remained silent for a moment, allowing Y/N's words to sink in. "It sounds like you went through a lot. But you've handled it with a lot of strength."
"Thank you," Y/N said, her voice reflecting a mix of gratitude and melancholy. "It's been a journey, but I've moved on. It's made me who I am today."
The conversation continued, with Kuroo asking about her current role and how she managed to balance her past experiences with her present. They shared stories and laughed over the similarities and differences in their volleyball experiences. It was a deep, engaging conversation that made Y/N feel more connected to Kuroo.
As the night wore on, Y/N glanced at the clock and realized how late it had become. "It's getting pretty late. We should probably wrap this up," she said, stifling a yawn.
"Yeah, you're right," Kuroo agreed. "Thanks for talking with me tonight. I really enjoyed it."
"Me too," Y/N said softly. "Goodnight, Kuroo."
"Goodnight, Y/N. Talk to you soon."
They exchanged final goodbyes and ended the call. Y/N placed her phone back on her nightstand, feeling a sense of quiet satisfaction. The evening had been a mix of reflection and connection, and she was grateful for the opportunity to share her story with Kuroo.
As she turned off the lights and settled into her bed, Y/N's thoughts were a swirl of emotions and reflections. The conversation had been unexpectedly meaningful, and she found herself wondering about the future interactions with Kuroo. With a contented sigh, she closed her eyes, letting the events of the day fade away as she drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever came next
