ACT FOUR

INT. LA - HOSPITAL - EMERGENCY WAITING ROOM - NIGHT

The space is buzzing with PATIENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS, and HOSPITAL STAFF. Darnell anxiously stares at the double doors to the ICU, while Simone, Olivia, and Jordan sit on pins and needles. Simone suddenly throws her hands up in frustration.

SIMONE

I don't understand what's taking them so long. Tell us something!

JORDAN

Hey... I'm sure the doctor will be out soon. Try to relax, sweetheart.  

Jordan puts his arm around her and she rests her head on his chest. Darnell looks down at his phone.

DARNELL

I hope so... I had to plead with Mama not to get on the road tonight.

OLIVIA

I still can't reach Kia.

(no response from Darnell)

Darnell, where is she?

Simone, Jordan, and Olivia look to Darnell for answers. He fidgets in his seat.

DARNELL

Uh... Kia. She had to--

Darnell looks up as DJ, Dianna, and Kia make their way over.

DARNELL

Pick up the kids.

Dianna rushes to Darnell's side. Kia avoids Darnell's gaze and sits next to Olivia. A tense silence falls over the group which grows with every passing minute.

The ICU doors open and a DOCTOR walks into the waiting room.

DOCTOR

James family?

Darnell and Simone leap up as Olivia waits with bated breath.

DOCTOR

Mr. James is stable, but he sustained a significant shoulder injury. A rotator cuff tear.

DARNELL

How bad is it?

DOCTOR

It was a complete tear... He's going to need surgery.

The words hit the group like a ton of bricks. Jordan, Simone, and Darnell especially, the athletes fully aware of what this type of news can mean for Spencer's football career.

SIMONE

Can we see him?

DOCTOR

Yes. Two at a time. But keep the visits brief. He needs his rest.

DARNELL

Monee, you and Liv go back first.

Simone and Olivia nod and follow the doctor to the ICU. Noticing the worry etched on Darnell's face, Kia gets up and sits next to him.
