-Yui-
The sun rises slowly, casting faint streams of light into Yui's room, but she barely notices. Curled up beneath her blanket, eyes wide open, she stares blankly at the ceiling. Her body feels heavy, her limbs numb, as if weighed down by invisible chains. The events of the previous night replay in her mind like a never-ending nightmare. Her chest aches, tight with guilt, fear, and the overwhelming certainty that her very existence is a threat.
Kakashi's voice echoes faintly through the door. He's been trying to talk to her for hours now, his voice soft but strained with worry.
"Yui... can you hear me? Please, just open the door," Kakashi pleads, his hand resting gently against the wooden surface separating them. "We need to talk... about the meeting last night. About what the Hokage and the elders decided."
Yui flinches at his words but doesn't respond. She pulls the blanket tighter around herself, as if trying to shield her body from the crushing weight of reality. Her mind drifts to the moment Kakashi found her last night at the shrine, the desperation in his voice, the fear in his eyes. He had stopped her from completing the ritual, but now... now it felt like it was only a matter of time before she had to face the inevitable.
Three days, she thinks, her breath catching in her throat. Three days left.
The elders' decision burns in her mind. They had given her an ultimatum, three days to either seal herself away or face the consequences. She can feel it like a ticking clock, the seconds slipping away, each one drawing her closer to an end she feels is already written in stone.
I should have finished the ritual when I had the chance, she thinks, her heart sinking. If I had just gone through with it, no one would have to suffer anymore.
Tears prick the corners of her eyes, but she blinks them back. She's cried enough, too much, really. It won't change anything. She feels hollow, like a shell of the girl she used to be. The girl who laughed with Naruto, who found a strange comfort in Kakashi's presence, who was beginning to believe, even for a moment, that she could have a life here.
But now? That girl feels distant. Almost like she never existed.
A soft knock on the door breaks her spiraling thoughts. Kakashi again. His voice is softer this time, like he's barely holding himself together.
"Yui, please..." he whispers, his forehead resting against the door. "You don't have to do this alone."
Alone. Yui's heart twists at the word. She's been surrounded by people who care about her, Naruto, Kakashi, Ino, but all she's done is hurt them. She thinks about the moments of panic, the accidents, the times she almost lost control of her power. The people who had been caught in the crossfire of her curse. Her eyes burn with unshed tears as she clutches her pillow, pressing it against her face to stifle the sobs threatening to break free.
I'm dangerous, she tells herself, her thoughts spiraling. I hurt people. I've hurt the ones I care about, and it'll only get worse. This is the only way.
But even as the thought crosses her mind, she can't shake the image of Kakashi's face from last night—the raw emotion in his eyes when he found her. He had been so desperate, so broken. And now, he was trying to reach her again. But she didn't want him to. She didn't want anyone to.
She didn't deserve it.
They'd all be better off without me.
Yui closes her eyes, trying to push the thoughts away, but they only grow louder, more insistent. The guilt is unbearable. Her body trembles as she pulls the blanket up to her chin, curling into herself. She feels like she's suffocating in her own skin, trapped in a cycle of self-loathing that she can't escape.
She doesn't know how long she lies there, just staring blankly at the ceiling, her thoughts looping over and over until it becomes a deafening hum in her mind. She doesn't want to exist anymore, not like this. Not when everything she does seems to hurt the people around her.
Another knock. This time, Kakashi's voice breaks through the fog.
"Yui, I know you're scared," he says, his voice cracking slightly. "I'm scared too. But we can figure this out. Together."
Together. Yui lets out a soft, bitter laugh, though it's muffled by her pillow. Together? She's only dragged him into her darkness. Kakashi doesn't deserve this burden. None of them do.
She presses her hands over her ears, trying to block out the world, trying to block out him. But his voice, thick with emotion, still seeps through.
"They gave us three days," Kakashi continues, his tone low, as if the words are painful to even say. "Three days to find a solution... or they'll force your hand."
Yui's body tenses at his words. The tears she's been holding back finally spill over, tracing hot, silent trails down her cheeks. She knew this was coming. She knew the village wouldn't tolerate a threat like her for long. But hearing it out loud, hearing Kakashi confirm what she already knew, made it feel too real. Too final.
Konoha will always choose the village over one cursed girl.
Her breath comes in shaky gasps, her chest tightening painfully as she tries to suppress the rising panic. She's scared—terrified, really. She thought she'd made her peace with the idea of the ritual, but now that it's so close, the fear is all-consuming. The truth is, she doesn't want to disappear. She doesn't want to be erased from the world like she never existed. But what choice does she have?
She can't stay. She can't keep hurting the people who matter most to her.
Another wave of tears hits her as Kakashi's words linger in the air. Three days. That's all the time she has left. She bites down hard on her lip, trying to stifle the sob that threatens to break free, but it's no use. Her body shakes with silent cries as she buries her face deeper into the pillow.
Outside the door, Kakashi waits. His heart is heavy with the weight of what he's just told her. He wants to break down the door, to hold her and tell her everything will be okay—but he knows he can't. Not right now. He's powerless to protect her from this fate, and the knowledge is tearing him apart.
"I won't give up on you," he says softly, though he knows she might not even be listening. "Not ever."
But Yui doesn't move. Doesn't speak. She can't. The silence stretches between them, thick and suffocating. She hears him shift, probably leaning against the wall outside, waiting. Waiting for her to open the door, to let him in.
But she won't.
I can't let him in, she thinks, her heart aching with the weight of it. I can't let anyone in anymore.
As she lies there, consumed by her own thoughts, she knows that Kakashi will wait for her as long as it takes. But she's already made her decision.
The ritual is the only way.
And in her mind, she's already halfway gone.
