-3rd Person-
Yui walked through the academy's gates the next morning, her head bowed low, her heart heavy. The usual chatter of the other students filled the air, but it felt distant, like a muffled noise she could barely recognize. Her stomach churned with dread, each step forward feeling like an impossible task. Despite Kakashi's reassurances, despite Naruto's constant promises to protect her, a thick cloud of anxiety clung to her like a second skin.
Today felt different. Worse.
The memory of last night, Ino's concerned eyes, the guilt, the panic, still weighed on her. She shouldn't be here. She should've stayed at Kurenai's house, away from everyone, but running away wasn't an option. Not anymore. Her hands trembled as she adjusted her eyewear, the protective glasses feeling heavier than usual. They were her shield, her safety, and at the same time, the symbol of everything that made her different. She was already strange enough with her white hair and crimson eyes, but the glasses made her even more of a target.
And they were watching.
The whispers started as soon as she stepped into the schoolyard. The faint giggles and side-glances from the other students prickled at her skin, but she kept her head down, refusing to meet anyone's gaze. She could feel the judgment, the curiosity, and the unease they felt toward her. It was always like this. They didn't know what she was capable of, what her eyes could do... but they sensed something was wrong with her, and that was enough.
Yui tried to find comfort in the fact that Naruto and Ino would meet her at their usual spot. But even the thought of her friends, the ones who had stood by her, couldn't lift the weight that pressed against her chest. They didn't understand the danger she posed. If they did, would they still want to be around her? Would they still call her their friend?
The break bell rang, pulling Yui from her spiraling thoughts. She moved quickly toward the edge of the courtyard, hoping to find some quiet before Naruto and the others joined her. But before she could take more than a few steps, a group of students blocked her path. Her breath hitched, and she froze.
There were five of them, faces she recognized from her classes, but never spoke to. Two of them stood out: a boy with sharp, sneering eyes and a girl with an air of superiority that radiated off her like poison. They were the ones who always whispered the loudest when she passed by, the ones who looked at her like she didn't belong.
"Hey, freak," the boy spat, his voice dripping with malice. "Where do you think you're going?"
Yui's body tensed, her eyes darting around for an escape route. She knew this was bad. The air felt thick with hostility, and she could sense their intentions before they even said another word. They weren't just going to mock her, they wanted to hurt her.
The girl stepped closer, her smirk widening as she looked Yui up and down. "What's with the glasses, huh? What are you hiding?" She reached out, her fingers brushing against Yui's arm.
Yui flinched, stepping back, but the group closed in tighter, surrounding her. Her heart pounded in her chest, the familiar panic clawing its way up her throat. Her breathing became shallow, her vision narrowing. She wanted to run, but her legs felt like lead, stuck in place.
"Take them off," the boy demanded, his hand reaching for her glasses. "Let's see what's underneath."
"No..." Yui's voice was barely a whisper, shaky and desperate. She pressed her hands against her face, shielding her glasses, trying to hold on to the only thing keeping her power at bay. "Please don't..."
"Please don't?" The girl mimicked her, laughing cruelly. "You really are a freak, aren't you?"
Tears stung Yui's eyes, and the world around her blurred. Her mind raced, thoughts crashing into each other like waves in a storm. She felt trapped, powerless. She couldn't let them take the glasses, if they did, something terrible would happen. They didn't understand. She didn't want to hurt anyone, but they were pushing her, cornering her, and she couldn't control the fear spiraling out of control.
"Leave me alone!" she managed to choke out, her voice trembling with desperation.
"Make us," the boy sneered, grabbing her wrist and yanking it away from her face. "What are you so scared of?"
In an instant, panic turned to terror. Yui's mind blanked, and all she could think of was the memory of those ANBU bodies, the blood, the destruction she had caused without even trying. If they took her glasses, if they looked into her eyes... she didn't know what would happen. She couldn't let it happen.
"Let her go!"
A loud, angry voice shattered the tension, cutting through the haze of fear. Yui blinked through her tears, and before she could even register what was happening, Naruto barreled into the boy holding her, knocking him to the ground.
"Back off!" Naruto shouted, his voice filled with a rage that Yui had never heard from him before. His fists clenched, his body tense as he stood between Yui and the bullies.
Kiba appeared next, his eyes wild and fierce. "What the hell is wrong with you guys?" he growled, baring his teeth. Akamaru barked at his side, snapping at the bullies' feet, sending them stumbling back.
Shikamaru strolled up lazily, but the sharpness in his gaze was anything but relaxed. "Troublesome idiots," he muttered, crossing his arms. "You don't get to mess with her."
The bullies scrambled to their feet, their confidence visibly shaken now that Naruto and his friends had arrived. The boy who had grabbed Yui glared at Naruto, trying to regain some semblance of control. "This isn't your business, Uzumaki. She's a freak, and everyone knows it."
Naruto's eyes flashed with fury. "She's not a freak! She's my friend!" His voice cracked slightly, but the fire in his words was undeniable. "You touch her again, and I swear you'll regret it!"
The boy hesitated, glancing at Kiba and Shikamaru, who both looked more than ready to jump in if things escalated. For a moment, it seemed like he might try to fight back, but then he scoffed, spitting on the ground. "Whatever. She's not worth the trouble."
With that, the group of bullies turned and slunk away, throwing one last nasty look in Yui's direction before disappearing into the crowd of students. The tension in the air slowly dissipated, but Yui couldn't move. She stood there, frozen, her heart still racing, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
Naruto turned to her, his expression softening as the anger drained from his face. "Yui..." he said gently, taking a step toward her. "Are you okay?"
Yui couldn't speak. Her throat felt tight, and her vision swam as tears finally spilled over. She couldn't understand why they had stood up for her, why they had risked themselves to protect her when all she could think about was the danger she posed to them. She was a burden, a liability. Why couldn't they see that?
Kiba walked over, his usual brashness replaced with a rare concern. "Those jerks don't know what they're talking about," he said, his voice firm but kind. "Don't let them get to you."
Shikamaru sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "You shouldn't have to deal with idiots like that," he added quietly, his gaze flicking over to Yui. "You've got us. Don't forget that."
But Yui couldn't shake the feeling that she didn't deserve this. She didn't deserve their loyalty, their protection. They were putting themselves in danger just by being near her, and that thought alone made her want to disappear, to run away and never look back.
Naruto stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Yui, we're your friends. No matter what, we'll always have your back."
Yui shook her head, the tears falling faster now. "You don't understand..." she whispered, her voice broken. "I'm... I'm dangerous..."
Naruto's eyes softened, and he gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "You're not dangerous. You're just... you." His voice was filled with such certainty, such unwavering belief, that it made Yui's heart ache.
But it wasn't enough. She couldn't believe it. Not when everything inside her screamed that she was a threat, a danger to everyone she cared about.
And in that moment, as her friends stood around her, their concern palpable, Yui felt more alone than ever.
