Rora had never been the type to get jealous. Not when someone complimented Asa, not when she had other friends. After all, Asa was always by her side at the end of the day, and Rora was secure in that knowledge. Or so she thought.
Today, though, things felt different. Asa and Chiquita had been practically glued together during their break, laughing and sharing inside jokes that Rora didn’t quite get. Every time Rora glanced over, there they were — Asa’s arm slung casually over Chiquita’s shoulders, leaning in close as they shared something on their phones.
Rora tried to ignore it, focusing on the song she was practicing. But every now and then, she’d hear Asa’s soft laugh, the one that usually only she could draw out, and it started to gnaw at her.
“Hey, Rora, can you help me with this part?” Rami asked, but Rora’s attention was elsewhere. She barely even noticed when Rami sighed and decided to leave her be.
It wasn't like Asa was hers—well, not officially. They’d been close for years, closer than anyone else, and there were always lingering feelings between them. Rora couldn’t remember when her playful affection for Asa had turned into something more, but it had. And now, seeing Asa be so free and easy with Chiquita was… unsettling.
She kept stealing glances at the two, her stomach twisting a little more each time Asa whispered something to Chiquita that made her giggle. Rora knew she had no right to be upset — Asa could be close to anyone she wanted — but that didn’t make the pang of jealousy any less sharp.
Eventually, their practice ended, and Rora could barely focus on the post-practice chatter. She lingered near the door, watching Asa and Chiquita pack up their things together.
Finally, Asa noticed her and waved, flashing that bright smile that always made Rora’s heart stutter. “Hey, Rora! You ready to head back?”
Rora shoved her hands into her pockets, trying to keep her voice casual. “Yeah, sure.”
As they walked out of the practice room, Asa fell into step beside her. Chiquita had gone off with Rami, leaving just the two of them. The silence stretched between them, and Rora could feel the tension in her chest building, even though Asa seemed completely oblivious.
"You okay?" Asa asked, glancing over at her with concern in her eyes.
Rora shrugged. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Asa tilted her head, as if trying to figure her out. "You’ve been quiet today. Did something happen?"
Rora opened her mouth to say, No, everything’s fine, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she blurted out, “You’ve been hanging out with Chiquita a lot lately.”
Asa blinked in surprise, then laughed softly. “What, are you jealous?”
Rora felt her cheeks heat up and looked away. “No. Just… I noticed, that’s all.”
Asa stopped walking, pulling Rora to a halt as well. “Rora,” she said gently, stepping in front of her so she couldn’t avoid her gaze. “Chiquita’s like a little sister to me. You know that, right?”
Rora knew Asa was right, but she still felt embarrassed for how the jealousy had bubbled up. “I know,” she muttered, staring at the ground. “It’s just… I’ve never seen you this close to anyone else before.”
Asa’s expression softened, and she took a step closer to Rora, their faces only inches apart. “You know you’re my favorite person, right?”
Rora’s breath hitched. “Am I?”
Asa smiled, reaching out to gently cup Rora’s cheek. “Of course you are. Don’t get all jealous on me now. No one can replace you.”
Rora felt a warmth spread through her chest, the knot of jealousy loosening. Asa’s words were reassuring, but it was her touch, her closeness, that really made Rora feel at ease. She leaned into Asa’s hand slightly, letting out a small sigh of relief.
“I guess I was being a little stupid,” Rora admitted.
Asa shook her head, smiling fondly. “You’re not stupid. You’re just… possessive. It’s kinda cute.”
Rora rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t stop the small smile forming on her lips. “I’m not possessive.”
“Sure you’re not,” Asa teased, stepping even closer until there was barely any space between them. She tilted her head, her eyes locked on Rora’s. “But, just so you know, you don’t have to be. I’m always yours.”
The confession hung in the air between them, and for a moment, Rora forgot how to breathe. Asa’s words weren’t just playful anymore — they were serious, filled with an emotion that mirrored everything Rora had been feeling for so long.
Without thinking, Rora closed the distance, leaning in to press her forehead against Asa’s. “I’m always yours too.”
Asa smiled, her thumb gently brushing over Rora’s cheek. “Good.”
They stayed like that for a while, the world fading around them as the tension melted away, replaced by something deeper, something more meaningful. In that moment, Rora realized she didn’t have to worry about Asa’s closeness with anyone else. What they had was theirs alone, and nothing could change that.
“Let’s go home,” Asa whispered, her voice soft and full of warmth.
Rora nodded, finally feeling at peace. Together, they continued their walk, side by side, knowing that no matter who else came into their lives, they would always have each other.
