ᴺᴼᵂ ᴾᴸᴬᵞᴵᴺᴳ : Where's my love?
"Ooh, does she know that we bleed the same?
Ooh, don't wanna cry but I break that way"
2015 — Hertfordshire, England
Leilani Kahulia had been, and still was, a troubled girl.
Born in Hawaii, USA, she spent her early years there with her adoring father. He loved her more than anything in the world, but his job as a Marine demanded much of his time. Leilani would spend her days running along the beach near their home, grateful for their proximity to the water.
In truth, she shouldn't have been as free as she was. Her mother was often too high or drunk to care about her whereabouts. From the age of five, Leilani frequently found her mother passed out in a chair or had to endure the shouting and insults directed at her small frame. To escape, Leilani would often retreat to her grandparents, who cooked for her and looked after her while their son was away.
The day Akuma Kahulia died shattered Leilani's world. She had no time to grieve before everyone began arguing over custody of the ten-year-old. The decision was made to uproot her from everything she knew and place her in an English manor with grandparents she had never met. From there, everything went downhill.
"It's raining. You shouldn't be sitting in the middle of the grass," a voice called through the rain. "Are you alright?"
The rain on the shoulders of the brunette girl with curly hair didn't seem to bother her. Now fourteen, she had grown taller and matured into a teenager since being uprooted from her life.
"Hey?" The voice repeated, crouching in front of her. "I'm Oscar."
Leilani didn't respond. She merely glanced up with eyes that held nothing but heartbreak and sadness. Her clothes were soaked, indicating she had been sitting there for hours, likely making her ill later on.
"Do you need me to call someone for you?" Oscar asked with a frown.
"There's no point," Leilani whispered. "There's no point to anything. Life sucks."
"I don't think that's true," Oscar replied. "There's got to be something that makes you happy?"
"I have no one who cares about me, no friends or family, no one who gives two shits what happens to me," Leilani sniffled. "I'd be more useful if I just walked to that bridge and stepped off it. No one would know."
"I'd know," Oscar argued. "I'd care."
"You're just saying that because it's the right thing to say."
"I'm saying it because it's true. I'm not leaving you out here," Oscar said sternly. "I'll be the one to care about you, alright?"
Leilani stared at him. She didn't understand how someone could promise that when they were fourteen years old — an age when she knew people often left, found new friends or changed completed. She didn't — and couldn't — understand what made him different.
"What are you even doing out here? It's nearly eleven at night—"She began.
"I moved here a couple of days ago from Australia... I was walking back from the library," Oscar admitted. "What do you say? Want to be friends?"
Leilani rose from her seat, water droplets cascading from her hair as she moved. The soft moonlight illuminated her face, casting a gentle glow on her light brown eyes. With a skeptical shrug, she conveyed her doubt about his sincerity. After a moment of contemplation, she turned towards him and asked in a soft, hesitant voice:
"So... what do you like to do, Mr. Save-Me-From-the-Rain?"
