"It's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me
At tea time, everybody agrees"
DECEMBER 2023 — MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Nicole Piastri had known about Leilani Kahulia for years yet she didn't know her. It felt like she knew so much about the young woman before she'd ever even met her; that she knew a version that her son was completely infatuated with.
She spent years hearing 'Lani this' and 'Lana that' but he'd never brought her home. She spent years dealing with his worry over leaving her alone for too long or not having enough time to get to England to see her when his racing got serious. Nicole was positive Oscar continuing living in England to be near the woman.
If that wasn't love, what was?
She didn't like the fact she was meeting Leilani because she had nowhere else to go. She wanted to meet her on better terms, when the girl chose to meet her. Even so, she was going to make Leilani feel at home with the Piastri's.
Hattie, Edie and Mae — Oscar's sisters — would not pass up the opportunity to tease Oscar for bringing a girl home, even if the two were just friends.
"Don't be nervous," said Oscar as they walked through the airport. "I'm a little embarrassed this is the first time you're meeting my family."
"I don't think they'll like me," Leilani said with arms close to her chest.
"Stop being so pessimistic," Oscar complained. "My mum's going to love you."
Leilani knew she could be stubborn, especially when she was nervous or stressed. Considering her occasionally suicidal nature and her episodes of deep depression, the stubbornness often kicked in a lot. Despite it all, Leilani would never be cruel or unkind, she tried her best to be a good person even when she hated herself.
She considered it a skill, personally.
"Lani," Oscar called quietly. "I'm really sorry I didn't know you'd been alone the last three years for Christmas."
"There's nothing you could have done," Leilani mumbled.
"I would have taken you to Hawaii like I'm going to do in a few weeks—"
"What?" Leilani's mouth parted. "Oscar, no."
"No?" Oscar scoffed. "I wasn't asking, Lani. You need to see your grandparents like I know you've been dying to do."
