"You take the man out of the city,
not the city out the man"
DECEMBER 2023 — MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Leilani Kahulia was not alone when she woke up on Christmas day.
There had been one or two times during the time at the Piastri household when Leilani had woken up alone, only to find out Oscar had fallen asleep on the sofa because he didn't want to get into the bed while she was sleeping. She appreciated his care for boundaries but they'd already talked about the fact he should be in the bed.
Though, she would admit the arrangement was rather strange. She reminded herself that they were just friends and there was nothing wrong with it but her heartstring still tugged when she woke up to see him asleep across from her.
Something were off-limits and, in her mind, her best friend was one of them.
"Merry Christmas, Oscar," Leilani's voice was soft as she spoke.
"Merry Christmas, Lani," Oscar returned, giving her a kind smile.
"Thank you for bringing me here," Leilani said after a moment.
The room was dimly lit as she sat up on the edge of the bed, gently rubbing her eyes, trying to shake off the drowsiness. It had been years since she had truly enjoyed Christmas, but this year was different. Spending it with Oscar had lifted her spirits, and the initial longing to go back home had faded away, leaving her with a sense of calm and contentment.
"Oscar, I didn't have time to get you a present before you flew me to Australia," Leilani whispered.
"That's alright, Lani, I wouldn't expect you too," Oscar replied with a sheepish smile. "I did get you something though."
"Oscar—"
"No complaints," Oscar interrupted.
Leilani glared at him playfully before getting up and moving to the bathroom to change while Oscar did so in his room. She could hear Oscar's sisters talking about downsides, which wasn't surprising for Christmas day. Leilani didn't even know what time it was.
She spent the first fifteen minutes of her day talking to her grandparents, not even caring how much it must be costing her to phone them. Despite feeling bad that Oscar was having to pay for it, she was relieved that she would be able to see them in a week and for them, it was the best Christmas present they could have hoped for.
