"Standing on the shore
Staring down a hurtling storm"
JANUARY 2024 — HAWAII, USA
Leilani awoke to a soft breeze in her room, one she was thankful for after being in Australia. The breeze would likely turn back into blue skies by mid-morning but Leilani didn't care about that. She liked the sun, especially in a place she wanted to be in the most.
There was still sadness that resided in Hawaii for Leilani, from the way her brain automatically thought about her dad or the way she remembered her passed-out mother. Her brain never truly shut off from any of it and it made it incredibly hard to feel peace at a strong level. Leilani felt more settled than at peace.
"Leila, are you awake?" Auli'i called. "Your friend is already up. We thought we'd do you both breakfast."
"I'm awake," Leilani yawned. "I would have helped you cook—"
"Don't insult me now," Auli'i tutted. "I am the cook. Now come, come."
Leilani chuckled, finding a small burst of energy to roll out her bed and stretch. She threw a jumper over her frame, not caring about the fact she was in her pj shorts as she walked to greet everyone a good morning.
They'd been in Hawaii for a few days now, though the first day had been spent trying to get over jetlag for Leilani. Oscar was used to travelling and dealing with it but Leilani hadn't done so in years.
"Do you have any plans today?" Keanu questioned as he sat with a book.
"No," Leilani admitted. "Just going on a jog later with Oscar."
"You won't catch me jogging," Keanu snorted. "But good for you too."
"Oscar likes running, Tutu," Leilani added, sharing a glance with Oscar.
"I bet you need to keep fit as a racing driver, don't you?" Auli'i questioned.
It amused Leilani because she knew that her grandmother was trying incredibly hard to make Oscar feel welcome and included alongside fact-checking what she'd likely read about him on google — a funny thing for Leilani to think about.
