MAY 2024 — OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

The hum of voices and the faint scratching of pens filled the lecture hall, a low drone that ebbed and flowed with the professor's steady voice. Leilani sat in the back row, her notebook open but largely untouched, her pen idly twirling between her fingers. Next to her, Miya was mid-rant, her animated gestures punctuating every word.

"I'm telling you, Leilani, it was a disaster. The music was awful, the drinks were watered down, and don't even get me started on the guy who tried hitting on the only girl with a boyfriend," Miya huffed, leaning back in her chair. "I mean, seriously, who does that?"

Leilani gave a noncommittal hum, her eyes drifting to the front of the room where the professor's slides flickered faintly on the screen. Her mind, however, was somewhere else entirely.

It was May now, the final stretch of the academic year. Exam season loomed like a dark cloud, but instead of dread, Leilani felt an odd sort of calm. Graduation was just around the corner. In a few short months, her time at university would be over, a thought that felt surreal no matter how often she turned it over in her mind.

Her gaze dropped to her notebook, where she'd doodled absent-minded shapes in the margins. Her thoughts wandered further, settling on Oscar. Their relationship was in a good place, better than she might have expected given their schedules. But it had been over a month since she'd seen him in person. Facetime calls had helped bridge the gap, but nothing compared to being with him—really being with him.

He'd be at the Monaco Grand Prix in the coming weekend. He'd offered to fly Leilani and Miya out to him, which is what they were doing, but that still provided her with some worry over leaving so close to her exams. She supposed she'd just have to study on the plane.

"Leilani. Leilani!" Miya's voice broke through her thoughts, paired with a sharp nudge to her arm. "The lecture's over. Everyone's leaving."

Leilani blinked, startled, and glanced around. Sure enough, the room was emptying, students filing out with backpacks slung over their shoulders and headphones already in place.

Miya raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms as she looked at Leilani knowingly.

"You were totally zoned out. What's going on with you?" She questioned.

"Nothing," Leilani said quickly, closing her notebook and shoving it into her bag.

"Right," Miya narrowed her eyes. "You're always this distracted, that's not unusual but to not come back to reality when everyone is leaving? That's odd."
