The sunset steadily over the Piastri household.
Leilani Kahulia had tried her best to remain social for most of the time in the house. The young woman, born in Hawaii, had found some from of peace with Oscar's mother and sisters. She found them to be lovely people, all making sure she felt at home, and Nicole made some of the best hot chocolate that Leilani had ever had.
However, it didn't take long before her first episode in the Piastri household began.
Episodes referred to the mini crisis she could fall into. This one had been unexpected but she was glad to be alone.
She'd had them ever since moving in with David and Janet Watts, her grandparents. The constant abuse she'd suffered from them had taken its toll and Leilani's stubbornness to accept that only made the fallout worse for her. Thus, the 'episodes' had been taking her over since the age of fourteen.
They took different forms, happening anywhere from a few hours to a few days where Leilani couldn't think of anything positive, thinking it was better to just give up or shutting her down completely where she could only stare blankly ahead.
Her grandparents back in Hawaii knew how to snap her out of it, as did Oscar and Miya, but that would require Leilani to be in their company. It never got easier and she knew it wouldn't until she was able to completely cut off her mother's side of the family for good.
So, she sat on Oscar's bed. She's gone up to his room after getting a little overwhelmed trying to listen to multiple conversations at once, trying to work out the dynamic and answering questioned. She was exhausted and had sneaked away when the others seemed to busy to notice. She knew Oscar would but he also knew that she liked her space.
"Lani?" Oscar voice called. "You've been up here a while. You okay?"
"Questioning my existence."
"No, you're not," Oscar replied sternly, crouching in front of her. "Don't do that. Think about something else."
"There's nothing good to think about."
"Think about me then, unless you hate me?" said Oscar softly. "Focus on my voice, not the ones in your head that I know you are listening to."
Leilani closed her eyes briefly and focused on Oscar's voice; he began talking about random things to keep her occupied. It took a few minutes before Leilani had evened out her breathing and opened to her eyes to look at his worried ones.
