"And I was dancing in the rain
I felt alive and I can't complain"
DECEMBER 2023 — OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Leilani Kahulia didn't have a good relationship with the Christmas period.
Since she'd been forced by her mother to take up residency in England with her grandparents, it had been nothing but depressing to say the least. Her grandparents had a deep-rooted hatred for their granddaughter, believing she was the reason that their own child was a drug addict and alcoholic. Of course, Fiona had been both of those things long before Leilani had been born.
When it came to Christmas, her grandparents on her father's side would save up money all year to try and fly Leilani back to Hawaii for Christmas. On the years they couldn't afford to do so, the grandparents on her mother's side would refuse to pay and let her go, despite having vast fortunes. Instead, they'd force her to stay at school during the period.
She'd resented David and Janet for that, amongst the fact they made comments about the colour of her skin, her accent and the fact she wished to see the waves, not the city. They would never be grandmother and grandfather to her; just David and Janet.
Leilani had only ever tried to be a good person but it had given her nothing but pain in return.
"Lani, what are your plans this Christmas?"
Miya Allen was Leilani's only friend at Oxford University. Miya was a sweet girl who never let anyone tell her who she was supposed to be or walk over her. She was shorter than Leilani, just above 5'3", with black hair that fell just above her shoulders. She was above average weight, and curvy, and what Miya joked was her 'chubby' side as she tried on outfits. Leilani had always found her pretty, and no one could deny her clear skill in fashion.
Miya was from New York. The fact she was an international student made it easier to bond with her as Leilani explained she was born and raised in Hawaii before being moved to the UK against her will.
Leilani, on the other hand, was a taller girl than Miya, standing at 5'6". Leilani had been born with naturally curly hair that had grown long and dark, complimenting her darker, sun-kissed skin tone inherited from her father. She had less skill in fashion than her friend, but she found a way to make her clothes match her slim figure, though she never thought she truly looked pretty.
"I don't have any plans."
"None?" Miya questioned.
"I'm staying here for Christmas."
