The moment Vincent left my office, I leaned back in my chair, letting the new information settle in. Lyra had more potential than I ever imagined-more power, more danger. But before I could fully digest it all, my phone buzzed on the desk.
I glanced at the number. It wasn't one I recognized, but from the international dialing code, it was clear where it was coming from. Tokyo.
I picked up the phone, my instincts already alert. "This is Deon."
A pause on the other end, then a deep voice spoke, smooth but with an edge that carried weight. "Deon Volkov. I've heard much about you."
I stayed silent, waiting for more. In my world, you never showed your hand too early.
The man continued, "I represent the Nakamura Syndicate. You've crossed paths with some of our smaller operations in the past, but nothing directly. I'm calling to extend an invitation."
That piqued my interest. The Nakamura Syndicate wasn't a group to take lightly. One of the largest and most powerful families in Tokyo, they were deeply connected to everything from underground auctions to international arms dealings.
"What kind of invitation?" I asked, keeping my voice steady.
"There's an auction happening next week in Tokyo. A high-profile event, exclusive to certain syndicates and organizations. We're auctioning off... rare items. Things you may find useful for your growing empire."
I raised an eyebrow. "And why would you invite me? There are plenty of other buyers in the world."
The man chuckled lightly. "True. But this isn't just about buying. It's about forming alliances. Our world is becoming... unpredictable. We've been watching your movements, and frankly, we're impressed. We believe a partnership could be mutually beneficial."
I didn't trust flattery, especially from someone in his position. But the Nakamura Syndicate didn't reach out unless there was something serious on the line. And an auction like this? They were offering more than just merchandise.
"When and where?" I asked.
"Next Friday. Midnight. The auction will be held at the Daiyu Complex. I'll send you the exact location closer to the date. Be prepared-the auction will feature some... very unique items."
I could tell from the tone of his voice that this wouldn't be your average underground auction. They weren't talking about art or weapons alone. This was something bigger.
"I'll be there," I said firmly. "And I expect no surprises."
The man chuckled again. "Of course not. Just be ready to bid. We're all looking forward to meeting you, Deon."
The call ended abruptly, leaving me staring at the phone for a moment longer.
An auction in Tokyo. The Nakamura Syndicate. The timing couldn't have been worse with everything going on with Lyra, but at the same time, it was an opportunity I couldn't afford to pass up. If I didn't attend, it would be seen as a slight. And if I did, who knew what connections or intel I could gather?
I stood up, stretching out my arms, feeling the tension building in my muscles. This was going to require careful planning. Tokyo wasn't just another city-it was the stronghold of power for syndicates as ruthless as they were strategic.
As I thought it through, my mind wandered back to Lyra. With her newfound abilities, she was at the center of something much larger than I anticipated. There was no telling if this auction had anything to do with her, but I had to be cautious.
If Lyra's past was catching up to her, it was only a matter of time before others in my world started showing interest in her too. She wasn't just a weapon-she was a prize. And that made her a target.
