Summary:
"I don't think lovers come in the middle of the night for an argument. Neither do they come for an explanation-"
"Then why do they come?" She bursts, words coming out like a hiss.
Cinder finds herself on Kai's doorstep after a mishap, talking with your ex isn't ever peaceful.
...
Cinder's Perspective:
She doesn't know what she is doing here, standing outside his door, a heartbeat away from knocking and ruining his time. Cinder knows she should turn, she needs to turn around before someone sees her, but she can't-
It's the dead of the night and she continues to stand before his house, unable to find the courage in her to knock , neither can she convince herself to go back and pretend that it was all a dream. And not how she is still here, willing to beg for his attention if that means the pain in her heart will go away.
Cinder isn't given much time to persuade herself as the door flings open, and Kai is staring at her, eyes that drooped with sleep seconds ago, now wide open.
"Fuck," he mutters, palm covering his face, as he tries to hide the evident surprise. Cinder puts all her energy into not fleeing at the moment, as she takes in him. He is wearing khaki shorts, paired with an oversized hoodie with a cartoonish print that reads 'Silly Goose' and the very sight of him expands the pain in her heart.
"Why are you awake this late?" He asks her and she thinks , how he didn't ask her why she is here.
"Cinder, are you okay ?" He asks again, and she notices how high-pitched he sounds like he is sore and looks avidly adorable with the brows furrowed and teeth nibbling onto his lower lips. Cinder doesn't realize it when she crashes to her knees, but she does catch the chill of Kai's hands wrapping around her, and his alarmed voice shouting her name.
...
She wakes up to the damp feeling of cloth lying on her forehead and finds herself tucked inside a blanket. The white ceiling above her is painted in a yellow light, covered with paintings of Greek folks.
"You almost gave me a heart attack." A familiar voice says, from somewhere in the room.
Rising, Cinder sees Kai, working in a corner , the fabric falls in her lap, breaking the soft hazy bubble around her. Quickly, she's on her feet, checking for any injuries, and trying to remember the events that led her to be in Kai's bed.
"Oii, Cinder, relax." He tells her, approaching closer to her. She notices her broken coffee mug on the table.
"Did someone drug me?"
"What?" Kai asks, appaled at the question, that proves his innocence, not that he needs one , Kai would never do something so vile.
"Oh, no no no, I didn't drug you- you crashed on my doorstep. I don't know why you came here." He explained, and Cinder recalled standing before his house, staring at him and nothing afterwards.
"Oh," Cinder whispers, sitting on the soft mattress , it dips beside her as Kai comes down on it.
"Feeling better?" He asks fingers pushed against her forehead and the proximity almost makes her feel delirious. She nods, not finding her voice, and tries to stay put.
"So, what brought you here last night?" Kai asks, hands moving around capturing the awkwardness around them. She expected him to beat around the bush for a while before he decided to humiliate her again.
"I don't know," she says, eyes not quite meeting his.
He tilted her chin, making her meet his gaze. "How about we answer that one more time?"
"Why are you doing this, Kai?" She asks, the intensity of his gaze, making her bold yet weak in her knees, sighing for having taken a seat, or she would have crashed (in his arms) again.
"Shouldn't I be the one asking the question?" He says the slightly mocking tone lingering at the end of his sentence was hard to ignore.
"Why?"
"Because you decided to come to me after everything you said," He points , the hand that had been holding her face is pulled back, and with it vanishes the shred of illusion Cinder had created.
" You didn't say anything then."
"I don't think lovers come in the middle of the night for an argument. Neither do they come for an explanation-"
"Then why do they come?" She bursts, words coming out like a hiss.
"I think you are more fit to answer that."
The words slap her face, recalling exactly why she had decided to leave. She and Kai argued too much like it was their favourite pastime and their cruel stubbornness drove the two to madness. But in her stupor, she always forgot that even in messy times she loved Kai with passion .
"Because I love you and it's driving me insane!" She choked, her voice raw with emotion, "- because I'm so desperate to have you in my life that I would come running to your house at midnight. And know that you would take me inside without questions. And all of last month I have been thinking, about how we can't keep pretending that nothing happened between us. I can't keep pretending you're not important to me, that I don't – that I don't love you. I love you so much that it hurts to not admit it."
She wipes her tears, her chest rising, as she muffles the sob trying to break out. She notices Kai extending his hands towards her, and without putting much thought into it, clings to it. She is in his arm, as he tries to calm her, fingers trying to unknot her messy hair, creating a soothing sense against her scalp.
"I was stupid. I don't know why I said what I said , I don't even remember what we had said that resulted in this," She says, body tucked against his , as she tries to get her words out before she loses the courage to admit her apology.
"It's ok , Cindy." Kai continues to chant like a mantra, as if , if he says it long enough , it will be true .
"It's not okay ."
"But it will be," He says, like handing candy to a scared child, and Cinder believes it because it is Kai and he won't lie to her.
