We had just arrived at the beach house, and to say the situation was awkward would be an understatement. The tension in the air was almost suffocating. Sure, I was excited to be here with everyone—IU, Hoseok, Yoongi, Yeji, and of course, Jin—but Namjoon and Jessi's presence put a damper on things. And, as if things couldn't get worse, Jessi had brought along her other friend, Lisa.
I could already tell what kind of person Lisa was just by the way she was eyeing Jin, knowing full well that he was here with me. It wasn't subtle either. Every glance, every little smile she threw his way was a calculated move. But then again, birds of a feather flock together, and she and Jessi seemed to be cut from the same cloth. I had come to realize that the only decent one in their friend group was Yeji.
"Hey, you okay?" Jin's voice broke through my thoughts, pulling me back to reality.
I looked up at him, grateful for the distraction. "Yeah, I'm fine," I replied, trying to sound more cheerful than I felt. "Just happy we get to spend some time together, even if you-know-who is around." I didn't want to say his name—didn't want to acknowledge that Namjoon was here, acting as if everything was fine. Seeing Jessi draped all over him still made my stomach churn. I hated that he could still affect me like this after everything he'd done.
"Don't worry about him," Jin said softly, giving me a reassuring smile. "We're going to have fun regardless." He leaned in and kissed me on the cheek, and despite everything, I felt my heart flutter a little. Jin always had a way of making me feel safe, like everything would be okay as long as he was by my side.
Just as I started to relax, I heard a voice behind me, one that made my muscles tense up immediately.
"Umm, excuse me."
I turned, and there was Namjoon, standing awkwardly in the doorway, clenching his bags like they were the only thing keeping him grounded. His eyes flickered toward me for just a second before looking away. The weight of unspoken words and unresolved feelings hung thick in the air between us. I stepped aside without a word, giving him space to walk through. I wasn't going to let this ruin my mood. Not today. I was here to have fun, to forget everything about him.
Namjoon brushed past, and I couldn't help but feel the familiar pang in my chest. It was frustrating that I still felt anything at all—especially when I could see Jessi nearby, watching the interaction with a smug smile on her face, as if she had won some kind of sick game.
Before I could dwell on it, Lisa's voice cut through the moment, dripping with flirtation.
"Hey Jin, can you help me with my bags?" she asked, her tone making it clear what her intentions were. She batted her eyelashes at him in a way that made me want to roll my eyes into another dimension.
I felt a surge of irritation rising up in me, but before I could walk away, Jin stopped me with a gentle hand on my arm.
"Sorry, Lisa," he said smoothly, without even glancing her way. "I've got my hands full with Y/N and my own bags." He winked at me, and my heart practically melted. It was such a small gesture, but it meant everything. He wasn't fazed by Lisa's blatant attempts to flirt. He was here with me, and that was all that mattered.
